91 Jimmy, was told I had the left brake light out. Went to change it, but the bulb looked fine; blinker works fine (on the left side). Swapped the bulb from the right side to the left side, same thing - No brake light, but the turn/brake light filament works when it's plugged in on the left side. Marker lamp (the small bulb) and tail lights work fine on both sides.

A few months back after replacing the RWAL computer (GM manual trouble tree said to after diagnosing), I had a RWAL Code 10, which has something to do with the brake light switch circuit. Had a mechanic look at it and the found a trace on some diode that is associated with the brake system had blown. They fixed it and I haven't gotten any RWAL codes since.

I've checked the taillight grounds and I have continuity from the bulb holder contacts to the ground. The fact that the blinker works (at least on the left rear) makes me skeptical of the wiring since the brake light and turn signal light both use that same power feed and filament. So I tried diagnosing the brake switch, first by jumping the purple and pink wires at the switch. I got voltage at the connector, but still no brake lights (I'm assuming jumping those wires would eliminate the switch and the lights should come on). There's an additional connector on the brake switch with an orange wire and a white wire. Looking through the wiring manual, I can't seem to find where these wires go or what their purpose is. Maybe they also need be jumped? The troubleshooting steps in the books really aren't very helpful in describing the function of that diode or the wires at the brake switch, other that the pink and purple wires form a circuit when the switch is closed.

For the reverse lights, I ran through the trouble tree and verified voltage on the green wire at the backup lamp switch and no voltage on the blue wire when shifted in reverse. I adjusting the switch one click at a time while in reverse and jiggling the shifter at each adjustment, still nothing. Verified bulbs were good, and ground between the bulb socket and body ground. My guess is it's probably just the switch, but I'd like the make sure before I pull half the dash apart to fix it.

so the brake and turn all go through the turn signal switch. you can test at the turn signal plug at the column. It does sound like neutral safety switch is bad.

the orange and white at the brake switch are either cruise control or 700r4 lock up converter

Looking around a little more today, I found out the brake switch connector with orange and white wires connects with the turn signal switch (orange is power from the fuse box, the white runs from the brake switch up to the turn signal harness). Some of the wires on the column/steering wheel side look pretty rough (the blades they're connected to move in and out of the connector pretty easily). I had been doing some digging around under the dash a few weeks ago looking at the cruise control wiring (but never disconnected any of the wiring) so it's likely I knocked something out of alignment. When I plugged everything back in, I got back my turn signal on the right side, but still no brake lights. While holding the pedal I actuated the plunger a few times by hand and I had brake lights.

Just to make sure I hadn't accidentally solved it, I cycled the key probably another 20 or so times, just trying out the blinkers, brake lights, hazards etc. I'd say most of the time everything worked as it should - sometimes with hazards on, one of the rears wouldn't flash but I'd cycle them again and they would, same with the blinkers. What was really odd was that a few times I would pull on the headlight switch and the fuel pump would prime. I'm going to have to see if anything lighting wires (either at the column or the switch) are getting crossed with the ignition switch when I put the key in run. With it being that finnicky, my best bet is to just change out the turn signal switch.

I should mention that under the dash the wiring appears to be all original, but I'm not sure if how the wires are ran is original. The harness that feeds the turn signal switch, wiper module etc. can't be situated in a way where its not pulling on one of the connectors or the brake pedal bracket. Maybe that's just how it is but it's a real PITA trying to get everything situated just for it get jammed up when I hit the brake pedal (especially the wiper module).
