I am in the planning mode of building a rear bumping for my jimmy, but I have a question, how much clearance should I leave between the top of the bumper and the tailgate, and how long do I have to make the 2 steel parts that attach to the back of the bumper and bolt on to the frame? Thanks 'all /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Give yourself enough clearance for tailgate sag. In doing my dads burb rear bumper(with tailgate)I lowered the tailgate down, he stood on it(about 180 pounds)then gave about 1-1/2" clearance.

For bumper extensions(bumper to frame attaching mounts)I'm going back 8" from the end of the frame with 3 grade 8 bolts per side.

I left about 1/4" gap between the top of the bumper and the open talkgate. With a load it hits a little. I cut the frame down and used 3"x5"x3/8" angle for brackets. 5" side to the frame with 3 grade eights on each side. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
