Well to leave alll the brackets on what is all involved to taking the rear bumper off of my 78 K5. the reason i wanna do this is so i can get some idea what a custom bumper would look like. Cause i got a peice of 8"X2"X1/4' C-channel just laying around, but i gotta use it to build a bumper for the old van that i daily drive.

there are carriage bolts that are bolted through the bumper. Look at the underside of the bumper, take off the nuts, pull bumper off.

ive been told before that you have to take off the trailier hitch and the fuel skid plate.

I removed my rear bumper on my 89 blazer without removing anything else. The hitch stayed in place and so did the gas tank skid. IIRC there are 8 carriage bolts involved.

Depends on the type of hitch. The original hitch had two bolts to the bumper below the license plate and two to the frame.

I didn't have a skid plate on the tank when I had this hitch. I cut the bolts off from the frame mounts. I think the skid plate would have been in the way.

This is the hitch that was on it when I bought it:

ditto as above...just unbolt the bumper...only time u unbolt the hitch n gas tank skid is if u have to drop tank...believe me i know...had to drop tank in Lowe's parking lot...NOT FUN!!!

well thats on my 1990...not 100% bout other models...my bad...

here is a picture of the rear, you can see the type of hitch i got. And you can also see why i wanna build a new bumper.

Check my bumper thread -- I bent mine, which admittedly is 3/16" and not 1/4", with a jack against the truck. I use a Hi-Lift, but you could prolly use a bottle jack. Obviously you gotta notch the inside of the bend, then support one end very well so it's got empty space under the bend, and push with the jack. :deal:

78...looks like to me all u need to do is unbolt the carrige bolts...have u looked under there yet 2 c where/what the hitch is mounted 2??? doesnt look to me that the hitch bolts to the bumper...at least from the pic that is...looks like an aftermarket hitch...if so, should b bolted to the frame like mine is...

x2 - The two upper carriage bolts closest to the license plate can be a PITA to get to with the hitch in place. Your hitch doesn't need to be removed.

This style hitch bolts to the bumper and frame.

Thanks guys i got it off, a couple of the bolts where hard to get at cause of the hitch but i got the bumper off. I am gonna paint the stock bumper a silver just as a temporary thing, off coarse i am gonna rough it up with a flap wheel first.

reason i was asking is cause the bumper on my work/daily driver van fell off and i cant get a stock one so i got some C-chanel and i need to bed it a little bit to make it look better.
