Does anyone make a rear bumper spare tire carrier that can still retain the stock bumper? I don't want to use the one that attaches to the body. It would be ok if the stock bumper had to be cut. Has anyone seen something like this?

I dont know of anyone, it would have to be ghetto fab'd. You couldnt attach it directly to the bumper as its just pop metal. Hell, the bumper sag on their own without a 50lb tire/rim attached. You make some kind of mount that would attach to the frame and would poke thru the bumper but not attach directly to it.

Yeah, I agree that the stock rear bumper wouldn't be able to handle the load of a full size spare on its own, especially when you figure in the load/leverage that a swing-away carrier arm will put on it. However, I think it might be possible to reinforce the bumper enough from the inside (welded gussets, some 1/4" plate across the face, maybe) to give it some strength and maintain a stock look. Don't know if that would be enough to support a carrier and a tire, though.

Something that is fabbed, tied into the frame and comes up through the bumper seems like a more direct solution.

Another idea, which would require some creativity, would be to build a full on custom bumper and swingout tire carrier but have it designed in a way that you could bolt the factory bumper to it for "appearance" purposes only. Might work, be alot of effort but if you must have the "stock" look, that is one way.

Is there anything that would work with the trailer hitch mount

Yea, they do but they have a single attachment point and I would figure the weight of rim/tire would move a bunch being top heavy.

Anyways just google HITCH MOUNT TIRE CARRIER and youll many versions.

I bet you could make for about 20bux worth of scrap metal and a welder.

Somebody used to make this. It had kind of a sub-frame the ran across underneath the stock bumper and the swing arm came up near the P.S. tail-light. It probably spaced the bumper back an inch or so. The thing is - the price was getting up there near a full-custom bumper.

Somebody on here got a receiver-hitch mounted swing-away carrier within the last year and posted a lot of pics.

It shouldn't be that difficult to make one now that I have a welder. I'll search around for the pics. I would prefer to keep the stock bumper. At least here in WA I think it is the law that the bumper can't be changed out. Thanks.

Here's the WSP webpage on passenger vehicle equipment:

It seems like the only condition is that the bumper doesn't extend "beyond the original bumper line". I've seen a number of trucks sporting rear tube bumpers, flat plate bumpers and the like around Seattle...doesn't mean they're legal, but they're out there.

I've never heard of a law that you had to retain stock bumpers in the 18 years I lived in washington. I have been pulled over by state patrol and warned for not having a rear bumper tho.
