I opened my rear diff cover (10 bolt) so I can replace a leaking axle seal. I thought I had an open diff, but I think its a gov-lock. My question is do I need to remove anything besides the retaining bolt and cross pin to remove the c-clip? I was fighting with it for about 10 mins trying to get the c-clip out, but no good. Any tips?

Thanks

BTW: I did search prior to this post.

I was doing a search and someone mentioned a "block" that the cross pin goes through?

No tips on how to get the block thing out? I messed with it again, but I dont want to pull on something I shouldnt.

10 bolt gov locks blow up alot, might be a good idea to get a open carrier
and yes if you keep it, the limited slip additive should be added to the gear oil.

Thanks for the info, but that does not help my current situation. My cover is off right now. I just want to replace the axle seal not the carrier.

Read the bottles of gear oil, some of them already have the additive in them.

I have a 5 gallon bucket of new stuff i aquired here that says this on it.

Thanks for the lube info, I am good with that now. I am still trying to get the damn c-clips out lol

Did the pinion shaft retaining bolt come out in one piece, or did it break and you didn't notice? Fairly common for them to snap right around where the threads end.

If it didn't, you shouldn't need to do anything further than push the pinion shaft through the carrier just far enough to push the axleshafts inward.

This is whats stumping me about getting the c-clips out. Once the center pin is pulled out, there is no room to get in there to pull the c-clips out.

spin it around to get to the other side, there should be a thing that requires an allen wrench i believe to remove it, thats what keeps the spider gears in place. one thats out, push the shafts in and the c-clips should fall out. at least thats how it was with my open 10b

That steel block that looks sorta I-shaped in your pic is what has to come out. The pinion shaft goes through the block, but on a Gov-Loc that block also prevents the axle shafts from moving inwards. It's a pain in the a$$ to remove the block. I think I ended up rotating the carrier a bit to walk the block around the side gears to where it can be pulled out of the carrier. Once it's out of the way, then you can remove the C-clips. :cool1:

Thanks Harry for the tip. When I get that thing out, are any other parts going to fall or come out as well? I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks again to everyone.

Nothing else fell out of mine. ;) If nothing is broken, the only thing that should falll out are the C-clips, when you push the axle shafts inward. :)
