I'm trying to track down the loud noise coming from the rear of my truck. At certain speeds I can hear a continous loud metal on metal knocking noise. It sounds like somene is taking my tow hooks and banging them against my bumper. It seems to be worse if I put it in neutral and coast down the road) I put it in neutral (1986 CUCV blazer) and set the parking brake and checked the ujoints. The rear ujoint has some play in it and I noticed when I grabbed the rear drive shaft and rotated left to right, the shaft moved about 2-3 inches left to right at rear axle pinion. Is this normal amount of play normal. The axle is a 10 bolt, and has 120k miles.

I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend! I'm guessing worst case scenario is new ring a pinion, and a new pinion bearing? How hard is this to do?

sounds like you need a rebuild on the rear end. take it apart and have a look, hard to diagnose from the outside.
