How does the window work when the engine RPM's are increased? All of mine worked noticeably faster when I increased the RPM, which increased the alternators output.

Another thing, how is your top aligned with the glass, and how does the tailgate align with the body? I firmly believed that PART of the cracking that happens at the tailgate comes from misalignment here (along with body flex) and any misalignment WILL force the motor to work harder.

Had same problem. Cable was rusted inside. Replaced cable and filled the new one with 30 weight oil, now runs smooth.

If you take out the gearbox and glass, the lift arms WILL cut off a finger when they snap. Do what the manual says to do, drill 1/8 hole and drive a sheet metal screw thru to lock arms in position.

When I bought my '87 the back window was VERY slow. I found that the grease in the cable had congealed and was making the cable far too difficult to spin. GM swaged a ferrule onto both ends of the internal cable, so you can't take it apart to clean and lube it. /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif I ended up getting a new one from the dealer for $13 (in 1989 /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). Thanks for all the replies. It started working quite a bit better now. All I did was clean out the channel that attach to the bottom of the glass, and then spray oil all around in there. It didn't work a lot better right away, but now it is. Maybe the oil just needed time to soak around or something. Anyway, I'll put it off now until it gets bad again. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Harry, right....I had to take the ferrule off to get the oil in there. Forgot to mention that. I reassembled it using thick wall heat shrink with the glue inside.

I needed this last week! I hadn't even checked the forum the past two since I've been on vacation. I had mine to finally go down but not up last week so I had to attach a drill to the cable to get it back up. I was going to post for some suggestions but you have already done so.
