I went to get mom a coke and it started to whine on coast and by the time i got home it is grinding.
so i guess i got to do bearing and seals might as well do the gears while i am at it i have the rear set

anyone use this instillation set? its by motive gear. I dont see a problem with it

also going to get these for the front

I have a motive gear install kit haven't used it yet, bearings are either timkin or Koyo. 3.73 would be a good choice for non overdrive trans. I went to 4.88 for my overdrive, and recently am considering 5.38 even with small 33" tires.

yes i checked the yoke and u-joints and transfer case then jacked it up put on jack stands and you can hear the rear end grinding over the motor

i was told to tear it apart in the morning and see whats bad and then order parts so in the am i will disassemble and see whats needs replaced
I am REALLY hoping the carrier is not toast cant afford a new one,
i guess i could try the junck yard and see if i can find one if its bad

Mine has been grinding on acceleration and deceleration, about one second each.
I think mine is the pinion yoke bearing.
I thought at first it was the transmission lockup system based on my transmission guy but then I discovered it was the rear, as evidenced by the leak at the yoke.
It has been the same for a month though but I need to fix it before it ruins the whole thing

Truck 12 bolts have crappy pinion bearings, if they have *any* play up/down or side/side they're bad.

Grinding could be a lot of things but ring and pinion are definitely possible. Usually the pinion seal will leak when bearings are bad, the pinion driving into the carrier definitely makes a grinding sound. But so can bad ring and pinion contact, and bad bearings themselves. You'll know when you take it apart.

this thing grinds past 25 mph and gets worse with speed, and there is no fluid leaking from the rear end

You definitely have a bigger problem than me.
And my axle is the 14bsf, and I do have a seal leak.
Good luck with your discovery

Well I guess the pinion did come lose or something fit between it and the housing and scared it pretty bad but doesn’t look cracked but will know in a second

The pinion nut backed off tighten it and no more noise. But should I try and get a pinion nut tighten it and see if I can get away for a while withou full rebuild

Personally, I would pull the nut off to make sure that the threads are in good shape, if they are, hit it with some red loctite and torque to the high side of the specification. Then use a paint marker on it for visual inspection. The grinding obviously wasn't good for it, but you can find out if it sounds ok and drive it for a while if things sound decent. Change the oil after a few thousand miles to see what comes out.

got to find the torque spec on the nut
and thats what i am going to do and slowly order parts to replace it all

Stake the nut with a center punch after you picture/ torque. I didn't know the crush sleeve eliminator kit was available for a 10 bolt

well no more noise , i took out the carrier and the pinion bearing looked good so i put it back in filled with fluid and ran it up to 50 and turned
engine off and didn't make a grinding no winning so we will see what happens.

I am going to start hording parts for a full rebuild front and rear
