What are the odds of an 82 K5 with a 10bolt and a 79 K5 with a 12bolt having the same gears? I want to use an old 12 I have because it has a posi in it and me being 17 dont have the money to buy and locker and get it installed or mess up trying to install it for the 10 bolt and no money for a 14bff.

odds

I'd say the odds are pretty good if niether one has an O/D tranny. If you know the ratio in yours, see if the tag is still on the one your looking at and it should give you the ratio. OR, if you can pull the cover, count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears and do the math, OR look on the build sheet in the glove box door, and see if it's listed there.

Both the blazers are mine, but one has no engine/tranny, has been up to the windsheild in mud. All the stickers with the stock parts are gone and the 82 has a 700r and the 79 had a th350.... Guess ill be counting teeht. I appreciate it.

Definitely count teeth but I'd bet both have 3.08's.

Rearend gears

It's extremely possible the one with the 700-R4 has 3.42's, but you may get lucky. I hope you catch a break and get lucky. I remember being 17 and a car nut. (AND broke!) Let us know how you make out. :waytogo:

od doesnt mean crap

espcialyl in the full size rigs,

its not like in the s-series where most all of them were 3.42 with 700r4

youll have to pull diff covers to know for sure

youre gambling/guessing here, completely, totally

ratios in these axles included
2.56, 2.73, 3.07, 3.40, 3.42, 3.73

ive personally seen with my own eyes- with diff covers removed- at least one of all the above ratios, 70s and 80s years, 10s and 12s both, since 1993 when i started pulling trucks and cars in and apart and such

and i have a collection of SPID labels that show all these ratios plus a few others, from full size GM trucks, 2 and 4 wheel drives,

the odds of them being same would be like the odds of winning a lottery, or whatever else

1 in however many of the axles they made

good luck

im guessin the 82 has 3.08 and 79 has 3.73 or 4.10
i'd swap out both axles, you'll be able to tell a differance with the new ratio and posi

Slim to none.........the '79 has 3.07's, and the '82 will have 3.08's
Place your bets ladies and gentleman..!
