How can I tell what gears I have in my truck? I'd venture to say that the ratio is stock. Its a 74 k5. Can I look at the pumpkin and tell by numbers or something????
front would be a dana 44 axle. and dana installed a tag on the bolt for the diff cover for years. if you still have it there it will have the ratio stamped on it. but thay get lost 2 ways left off when cover removed for service or rusted off.
other wise there is lots of ways. but its best to pop cover and count or lok for stamped info on ring gear and change oil in the diff at the same time.

thanks. Next question would be what gear ratio to change to. Its a th350 so no overdrive. I'd like to be able to do at least 70 on the highway without wrapping it out. But I want more torque. 383 is the power plant. No cam.
The only way to know for sure what the gear ratio is is to drop the cover and count the teeth and do the math. Many people have swapped gears over the years and even IF there is a tag on the axle that doesn't guarantee that's the ratio still in the axle.
What size tire are you running? Take an actual measurement of the tire since most run alot smaller than stated size. Once that info is known we can suggest a gear ratio that will be the best of both worlds without twisting the engine up.
