I'm planning on rebuilding the rear end in my 'burban over the long weekend, and I was going through my Chilton's manual to make sure I had everything I needed, and had a fair idea of what I am getting into. the manual seems to indicate that I need to completely remove the axle from the truck. It is a 14 bolt 10.5" FF.

I do not intend on doing anything with the wheel bearings or brakes, so I am wondering if I really need to drop the whole thing?

No, you don't need to take the axle housing out of the truck. It just gives you a more comfortable working position to have it on a bench. It also makes it easier for them to take pics if it's on a bench.:D

No need to remove the housing. Infact, if you are only working on the carrier and it's bearings...just unbolt the shafts and slide them out. Don't even need to remove the wheels or jack the truck up.
