I seriously need to cut the rear fenders on the 71 open ALOT. The tired pretty much rub everywhere and the tired have self clearanced some of the fenders already. I am thinking of takin the inner fenders wells out and cut till everything fits then buils a new inner fender inside to fit. I want to fit a corbeau bench in the rear and the width on theat is 42" so leave at least taht much room. Anyone done something similar and have pics?

I tubbed the rear wheelwells out on mine. not sure how wide it is in between. not a 1st gen but might give you an idea

Mine are close with the 42's too.
Trimmed both front and rear of the quarter.
Also installed a set of zero rates and moved the axle back an inch and a half.

Was still rubbing bad inside the wheel well though,
(cutting the tire on the body line bad)
so I sliced piece of tubing in half and welded it in as a rub rail for the inside of the tire.
Works damn good for a quick/cheap/easy fix, no more cuts.

Got the outers cut tonight. Friend is building a 71 shortbox and bought all new box parts to make it nice so I got his old inner fenders so I can tub it a few inches too.

I have to do the same thing to mine before my next outing. Seems almost sacreligous to cut a 1st gen.:doah:

Guys, get over it already...

It's a necessary evil if you wanna wheel a 1st gen and wheel it hard, no way around it.

So far to date, I've mostly cut off rust anyway and MNorby had major rot as well, think of it as the "after life". :D

Mine has been sitting for the last two weeks, just letting me enjoy it's final moments as an uncut beauty. Ok, not really I can't drive it cause of my kah nee.

I widened my wheel wells by about 3 3/4 inch or one raised pleet and one low pleet of the bed floor. First I cut the factory well mount and one floor pleet out as one piece and saved it, the length of the wheel well, had to cut back the bed support rail. I cut out the width of 2 pleets then rewelded back in the factory flanged piece so the well would bolt right back in.

You can see the driver sid well and I FINALLY got around to doing the pass side. I made one cut in the Pass side, but like a dummy I sectioned out a piece out of another wheel well set to do the driver. I should have made only one cut in the driver well too. I just wasn't thinking at the time, ohwell it still worked out the same.

Then I cut the wheel well openings to match the shape of the inner wheel well. Im not sold on the look but it has way more tire clearence.
