I am helping my buddy set up his 12 bolt rear end. He swaped his 3:08 gears for 3:73 and the ring gear had about 1/4 backlash so started shimming it but we cannot get it shimmed enough as it starts to hit the housing...I thought we would grind a little on the inside of the rear end housing to get it to clear, but I dont think we can grind enough to clear.

Waht am I doing wrong? Am I correc that I can still use the carrier from the 3:08 for the 3:73 or will I need to get a new carrier? Any help would be great as he really want to get his truck back running again.

You're using the wrong carrier, the 3 series carrier is for 2.73-3.42 and the 4 series carrier is for 3.73-4.56.
