So I have just put on 500 miles on my rebuilt 350, The rear main is starting to leak, checked with my motor guy and he says rear main is not under warrenty. I have checked with a local shop and they want around 500 to fix it, am I getting a good deal? Or is it worth getting some gear head friends to help to replace the seal? Im not sure what is all involved with replacing to rear main. Does the tranny have to come out? 89 K5 350 W auto 700r4. Thanks for any input!

I was just reading a service manual last night and according to that, if it's a 2 piece seal it can be done just by dropping the oil pan and fabbing a small punch tool to push the top half out. I'm curious about this too, as my rear main needs to be replaced.

FWIW, the manual made it look pretty easy. Then again, it always does...

I think it is a 1 piece seal, so the tranny or the motor has to move. I would think it would still be under warranty. I would tell your engine builder that he has to fix it or you are gong to tell everybody on every website you go on what kind of a $hit he is.
Tarey
I'd still try fo fix it myself.

Are you sure it is the Rear Main? A likely scenario is the rear of the intake maifold. It drips down the back or the motor and will eventually drip off the flexplate/TC cover.
