I would like to replace the rear main seal on my '94 Burb w/ TBI 454. Given that it's a 1-piece seal, can this be accomplished by moving the transmission out of the way and NOT subsequently dropping the oil pan? What specialty tools might I need?
yeah there is a way. simply pull the motor. J/k. Seriously the trans will have to come out, once out you can pry the seal out and install the new, without pulling the pan, as long as the "adapter/seal holder" isnt leaking.
You can pop the seal out with a screw driver. It is easier with the trans removed because you may need to tap it inbetween the seal and adaptor a bit with a hammer and need the room to pry around to get it loose. You may want to replace the adaptor plate gasket also which would mean you will have to at least drop the pan in the rear.In that case Id do the seal when the adaptor is removed.Another way is to drill a small hole in the seal and screw a screw in.Grab the screw with plyers and pull the seal out.
