Has anyone on here mounted a rear winch down inside the frame rails under the body behind the bumper if so can you post some pics. Any help or ideas about doing are always welcome. Thanks in advance

I'm about to do it on Mutt.. but that's a tubebed custom x-member deal...

the K5 will get it eventually...

Someone on here has to have some input or has done something like this before

TTT

It's rare enough for guys to have a winch on the front.... I wouldn't mount a winch in the back unless I already had one up front, and probably not even then.

Why are you so excited to have a rear winch?

Well I am using it to power the swing gate up and down and figured since I am gonna have one back there see if there is a way to also use it for rear winching as well. If not I will go with the original plan. But you guys have lots more knowledge and experience so figured I would ask the wiser ones out there about this

This is the swing gate that swings down and the tire will be on the inside when in upright and locked position. That way when it comes down its already almost on the ground and when it's up its protected by the gate

I'm actually gonna put a hidden receiver hitch behind the licence plate and was tossing around the idea of a hidden winch up front.

Run the rope thru a billet fairlead in the front bumper where the front plate would normally go.

I've been in some predicaments where a rear winch would have been a lifesaver.

I think that even a hidden receiver up front and use a portabe winch mount. Wire in a plug front and rear, but leave it up front as an embellishment to the font end with maybe a small bar mount.

Easy to make.

Then you can move it wherever you need it or even stow it inside for security. I plan on having a hardtop most of the year.

Botton Line: Like everyone else............ IDK:dunno: I got so many idea that it becomes hard to stay focused on one thing at a time!
I got some floor patch panels in today!:D

That was my thought originally but after all the fighting with the new front bumper and finally getting front winch mounted. With the swing gate, my buddy was helping out and we were trying to make it air powered but the geometry didn't work. So back to basics with the winch cable taking all the weight. I know it sounds crazy but was thinking of using something like the stingers u see on the front as a high point for both the tire gate and also a rear winch point. I just know it will put a lot of stress on the cage when it's used for anything other than pulling the gate up and down

Keep it simple.....the fancy sh!t is great but it's another thing to work on!
If you're gettin that serious you're gonna need a BUNCH more unbreakeable stuff!
I'm makin' mine a driver....I got that Jeep for off-road, it's bad-ass!

Just a thought that popped into my head... Instead of powering your tire mount, what about some heavy duty springs to just make it lighter to lift by hand? My buddy's new truck has springs in the tailgate for that and it's pretty slick. Obviously you'd need something heavier than that, like maybe a garage door spring but maybe this'll give you some ideas. :)

you'll need to move/rework that back x-member to truly tuck it between the rails and behind a bumper, especially a stock bumper...

you could mount one right behind that stock x-member, but it'll require a custom bumper that accounts for it and sticks out a bit further.... basically you can bump the center of the bumper out, from rail to rail, like 4, 5"s, than taper it back in to the qrters... that's how I'm doing my K5 with the tube bumper/spare stinger, cuz I'm keeping the stock tank... (it actually helps with the swingdown stinger)

with no fuel tank, and refabbing that back x-member into a combo x-member/winch mount, it'd be easy peezy... that's basically how I'm doing the back of Mutt...

edit... I'm an idjit, I just realized your talking about a first gen... disregard that stuff.... :doah: :haha:

i am one of the few then.... and for good reasons.. will say why in a minute...

got to find my pics...

ok so for me..

I want a big winch in the back to pull me out if i need it (Ramsey Patriot 15,000lb).. I do want to put a hydraulic winch up front.. if I was going forward I want to keep going.. but im a gumbo mud lover so no front winch for rocks...

with that I also want max battery separation from the front so I can kill the 2 batteries trying to get the truck out and still have juice to crank over (on the 2 up front)

I went to a local steel yard... and bought a piece of C Channel... cut the sides off and bolted it up...

i know it is a 78... best i could do

Freakin' sweet, I'll attempt something similar with my 78'

How does ur Ramsey hold up when u dunk it in a hole. My buddy had one years ago and one nasty mud hole killed it. Just wanna know if with the times they have gotten better

it's not done, just a brain picture.. it's basically the only fab work I have left on the K5... :doah: :haha:

Mutt's winch will be done by the end of the summer, but obviously that's a little different, and easier scenario...

dunno never used the winch... :dunno:

detroits, 40's, lots of skinny pedal all lead by using the noggin has lead me to not get stuck... also not leaving my driveway in many years helps not needing it either:whistle:
