I have a 91' Suburban with the 241 transfercase. When I was replacing my rear u joint I noticed it was leaking around the rear output on the transfer case. So I picked up a new seal but have not installed it yet. Is it easy to do? Do I just remove the old one and install the new one? Is there anything else preventative I should do while Im doing the seal. Thanks in advance.

if I can do it...anyone can.

I just used a screwdriver, and popped it out (carefully)

Then, I used the little installer cap that comes with a speedi sleeve (it was the exact diameter) and drove in the new seal. I think if you have patience, it will be just fine.

Be very careful. If you check out the last pg ot 2 of my build thread, You will see I messed mine up. It is very thin right there. I used a flathead and you just need to be carefull. I wasnt. I installed mine with a rubber mallet. Its easy though.

I tried a seal puller, but couldnt get it...so I used a flathead....but i agree, be very careful and know what you are trying to accomplish.

I recommend removing the whole tail piece when installing the new seal as opposed to doing it while under the truck. You will also want to replace the bushing in the tail piece as it is probably worn down as well.

I did mine just laying under there, but I must say...i didnt replace the bushing because I dont think you can get to it that way.

if I already replaced the seal, but have the bushing ready to install....can I just remove the tail piece and install the bushing, then replace the tail piece? That wont have any affect on the seal right?

That is correct. Just pull the tail piece by removing the three (maybe 4) 10mm bolts.
You want to replace bushing and then install seal. The seal can be removed with out damaging it.

still no worries there. most seals have a metal body that sits above the tail piece lip, so just tap it out gently using a flat screwdriver and by working around the seal as you tap.

fixed my post...It should have read

"if I already replaced the SEAL" - not bearing
