on my rear output yoke on a 205, theres some play and its leaking. can i replace the rear out put bearings with out pulling down the whole transfer case? and i think its cause rattling/grinding/vibrations noises during acceleration and worse during coasting. and my rear shaft rear u joint mite be failing soon too. :doah:

drop shaft.
drop yoke
drop seal housing.
pop out bearing
reinstall all parts.

if fixed yoke stuff. not sure on slip yoke.

its a fixed yoke, mated to a th350. but sounds easy enough. im guesing the needle bearings are behind the 2nd housing? im looking at the schematics and it shows a 2nd rear output bearing. is that the needle bearings? i was doing some research and i seen that alot of guys haveing changed the rear bearing and still had play. mines not drastic. but it slightly moves. maybe the crazy vibrations is the ujoint.:dunno: anybody know how bad it can get before it totally fails? and do you know where to find out the rear bearing part#?

The vibration sounds exactly like bad u-joints. I have been changing u-joints in a shop for 23 years and i've run across some of my own that you could not tell the joint was bad until I took it out and then you could clearly see it had a bad joint. I would replace the u-joints first as it's a common maintenence part anyways.

ya thats what im thinkin, i cant count how many threads i just read of people saying that they replaced the rear bearings and it still had play. and i just got under there again and its actually the ujoint sliding side to side in the yoke cups on the rear end. like i have the wrong ujoint size? even the caps of u joint slide side to side its barely but still moves. i just had a shop install a spool in rear end so they mite have put wrong ujoint in. its been a few years since i personally checked the ujoints on the rear.

Look at the Yoke to see if the "ears" are broken. There should be a little ear on either side of the Yoke which keeps the u-joint centered, if either ear is broken you need a new Yoke. It could also have the wrong size u-joint in there as well though like you said.

yep both ears are there, theres like enough room for a finger nail maybe 2 to fit between ear and u joint, i also just noticed that the breather nipple that the breather hose hooks to pulled out of my 14bltff. like it pulled the threads out of the housing. is there another one i can use? would it hurt i used a tap and made some new threads? it probly wont hurt nuthin jus thought it wouldnt hurt to ask.

Ok, good to know the ears are still on the Yoke, doesn't mean that the Yoke is still good though as a u-joint that isn't held in tight can slide side to side and beat the Yoke causing a loose fit.

The original breather nipple is just a pressed in fitting, if you're careful you can use a 1/8" NPT tap and grease it good and tap the hole for NPT threads then use a 1/8" NPT to 1/4" hose barb or whatever size hose barb you want and be done.

what if im not careful? is it just tough to tap it cuz the tap could break offf in the houseing? im goin to take it to a local shop here thats run out of the guys house when he gets room in his shop so i can get his opinion too since he built the shaft for me years ago and gave me the yoke thats in there now. and try a differant u joint to see if the yokes wore out.

If you're not careful then you'll end up with metal chips in the diff and that usually isn't any good. Now if you remove the diff cover you will be able to clean out any chips and do a gear inspection at the same time along with new gear oil (not a bad thing since it is probably one of the most overlooked fluid changes ever).

Tapping the housing is real easy and you won't break a tap unless you're doing something really stupid.

coo, so im guessing the grease is to keep help keep metal chips from goin into houseing? i just had the gears replaced about a year ago. first time had a buddy do it and he didnt set pinion up right and pinion bearing went into housing.:sign3:but sounds ez enough.
