I think mines out. The rear end leaks where the ubolts are. Im gonna have to replace the seal, but first I need to know how. So how do I go about replacing the rear pinion seal?
This is for the 10 bolt only mind you and you`ll get a couple different answers on this. The actual recommended way is to actually pull the axles, gears and reseal and replace the pinion crush sleeve setting the proper torque in inch lbs which it done with a new yoke nut. You cannot simply pull it apart and retighten up the yoke nut as tight as it can go or it will smoke the pinion bearing within a few miles.
I personally have replaced two 10 bolt pinion seals in my 84 K5 and 74 K10 as mentioned below and never had failures or issues, however I have also mic`ed the pinion shaft showing and counted flats of the nut upon removal, replaced the seal and after cleaning the threads throughly, slipped the yoke on and put a small and sparing bead of RTV on the back of the pinion nut washer to prevent oil weepage thru the splines then used red 271 locktite to reinstall the old nut and tighten back to the exact place it was which is critical for pinion bearing preload.
To do it right you need to measure the existing pinion bearing preload BEFORE you take the nut off of the pinion. Then when you put it back together you can put it back to the proper setting. Sometimes they loosen up over the years, it will most likely need to be tightened up a bit. If you are not familiar with this procedure it may be worth it to pay your local shop the 50 or 60 bucks to do it right.
