One of my rear seatbelts is locked solidly in the "in" position. I've jerked on the thing with all my strength and body weight and it won't come out. What needs to be done to loosen it up or even replace it?

Replacement is a pain, as you have to remove a large part of the seats outer components to get to it. Mine does this, but typically when it is out. What I have done is open the cover near the seat on the side of the retractor, and spray some silicone lubricant, then continue to pull on it until it finally releases.

That usually happens if the belt is twisted as it retracts. I've had mine do that from time to time when people get the belt twisted as they let it retract and i've been successful at getting it freed up by gently tugging on it then releasing doing it several times in succession.

It's been this way since I got it in June but I haven't bothered when it was just the dogs and I. Now I'm driving around with my buddy and his kids all the time and it's a problem I need to fix.

I'll try these guys. lectric, where's the retract thingy in relation to the bolt that holds it to the seat frame?

The seatbelt rolls up on a spool toward the bottom of the seatbelt near the floor. The edges of the spool have notches similar to a ratchet strap and a piece of metal locks into the notches. If it is locked in the full retracted position you may be able to stick a long screwdriver in the seatbelt housing and dislodge the metal bar to make it release. if you use a pen light you might be able to see what you need to do.

Sometimes if the vehicle has been involved in a sudden stop (crash) or similar incident they will lock in the position they are in.

I have a similar problem with one of mine...only it is stuck half way out and won't retract far enough in to be used by anyone who isn't huge. I've attempted to fix it without any luck. Also haven't been able to find any replacement.

Any ideas?

In some of the newer cars this is a baby-seat "feature" to lock in position. I am not sure when they started doing that, or what year your truck is, though, so that is just a (probably useless) thought.

The baby lock is where you pull the seatbelt all the way out and then release it all the way back in then when you pull it out the next time it won't go back in.

To release and go back to normal just pull the belt all the way out and it will return to the normal mode.

On mine, as I look at the seat from the front, standing behind the center console, the retractor mechanism itself is left of the seatbelt opening on the left seatbelt, the opposite on the right.

To release that mode, you let it all the way IN, not out, as when you have it locked in that mode, you Can't pull it out.

I hate to ask, but is this one of the "backwards" seatbelts where the "female" part extends and the "male" part is fixed? I know the setup is confusing for a lot of first-time K5 back-seat passengers.

It is in my 87 K-5. The males are mounted to the floor and fixed while the female extends out of the retractor mounted to the rear seat rail. Mine will extend out all the way but will only retract about 40% and stops...haven't been able to figure out how to fix it. Haven't been successful in locating a replacement either.

Yep, it's the d-side female rear seatbelt. It's locked solid in the retracted position.

I keep forgetting about this...need to go mess with it.

So...nearly a year and a half later 4X4HIGH was correct. The driver side seatbelt connector was upside down when you laid it out flat on the seat as it came out of the mechanism/housing. The GM button was down where as the passenger side faced up...which seemed correct.

I ended up toying with it and not making any headway. So I jammed a screwdriver in there past the little spring loaded plate thing and suddenly I could pull the belt out a little bit. Kept repeating this until viola! it came free. Belt was twisted about half way out. Works great now.

(In my defense...I moved out on my own right about when I posted in this thread last and then rarely used the back seat. When I did I'd remember and then promptly forget. Then I got The Tracker so it's retired to the play toy life. Going on a day trip with friends soon and we're taking The Blazer so I finally sat down to dick around with this.)
