Has anyone had problems with rear drive shafts or u joints? I have a 89 jimmy with a 4in lift and 33s . If there is already a post about this please direct me . I plan to have this as my DD and dont want to worry about replacing my u joints every 10000 mi . That's what i was told by the drive line shop .:dunno:

I can not Beleave Nobody answered your Question,
I have Owned 3 Gm 4x4 's
87 Gmc Jimmy 3" Lift, I added 3'', My self,
And Modified Shaft,,Lenght, to correct the New Distance, between T- case And Rearend

74 Blazer,6 inch lift 3 inch body 3 '' frame,,Total Six
and a 75 SWB Truck made out of a Rolled Totalled Jimmy,
6 inch Lift,,MonsterMudders,,,All previously Owned,

I would Crawl under and Visualy Check The U-Joint's,,
For Grease Loss ,Slack,or "Rust" (Sure Sign of Imeadite Failure coming very soon ,
coming from cap's,And Occasionaly Grease the Zerk
And Learned That the Replacements,,
>> Meant buying the Higher Priced Joints For Reliablity and Milage,,The Cheap ones Failed Sooner,,and Left Me stranded
Mike
Milage varys with Lift Angles and Driver's Habit's and Inspection,,Checking it Like Oil,,Mike
And On two Ocassions cost Me Having to,,
Pay For Fabricating/Balacing a New Shaft,
A Towing Bill,

Does your rear DS has a CV on it? I would highly recomend going the rear CV route if your gonna have it as a DD. I have the same set up and makes a big differance on the vibrations. Cost a little more but worth it. Just my two bits!

Reply to BIOHAZK5 C/V Yoke

No Just the Drive Shaft I replaced, Simular to Stock But I am Willing to Try It,,,Any Donor Vehicles Sudgestions??
And Thanks for the Idea

BTW just some Experiance To Share,,

By The Trany Shops First "Try" at getting The Correct Mesurement,
After 3' Lift,,
>>While "All Four Wheels" >"Loaded">>>> or on Drive On Lift
WE Stuck D/Shaft It In all the Way And Pulled It Back,, A Inch /-Inch n' Half?
Then Measred from Rear end Yoke U-JointCup center,,
To Center of U-Joint CupSlider End Sticking Out,of T-Case,,,
Wrote it Down,, For D/S Fab Shop,,,35 miles away,,
So that The New drive shaft Could Be Made,,
Correctly,,Ahem,,
Only Problemn Was,,, THe "New Trainee">> R n R Guy,**** Came Behind Us,, While Measuring,,,,,And Slid The Slider in all The Way,,Never saw Him Do it..Arrrgh!!!

I Picked up the first Shaft From D/S Fab Shop,, Put It In drive for a couple day's,,,It Seemed all Right,,, but then noticed it binding at Stop Light And A Bang,,, Two Weeks Of DD,, and It Broke the U-Joint ,Slider,And main drive Shaft End ,,on the way home,,
>>>>Some times They Break the Exstenion Housing< I was Lucky

I Found New Pieces,,$$$
Re-measured Shaft,,,Checked Again,,,
And When I stuck new slider Yoke in and Pulled it Out,,Placed the Tape and got A New Measrement ??? :doah:

The R N R Man Admited to the "Push in",, While He was asking Why we Pulled It Out,,For Measurement,,
The Trany Builder Guy 4X4 Expert *****,,,,,,,Let him Have It,,,
The New shaft Is working Just Fine

But the CV -Joint Add on Sounds Great,,
Mike

THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT. I got lucky and found a rear shaft out of a k5, in a junk yard that had the larger u joints now i need to replace the rear pinon yoke with one from a 14bolt semi floater to compelte the set up. So hopefully this will by me more time with u joint life.
