Farking rust is pissing me off again..
Online searches for rear spring hangers for my 82 GMC K2500 shows the one in the rear position is readily available (for about $50 !)--but the front hanger for the rear spring, only one place,"General Spring" ,seems to list one, with no photo or dimensions to go by,and the price is about $150 !..each!.
..
The front hanger for the drivers side rear spring on my truck is badly rotted on the part that forms the triangle shaped brace ,on the side facing the axle..
I can put my hand thru the hole..
...the other side of it appears solid, and the bottom area where the spring bushing bolt goes in is still solid,no holes at least,it may be a bit thinner than new,but its not bad..
There is an angled reinforcement plate the hanger is riveted to,that attaches to the lower lip on the frame rail and also extends upward over the inside of the frame,it appears that a cross member is also riveted to that part..all that seems intact, and though I feel it is unlikely the hanger would ever fail suddenly,I am betting I wont be able to get an inspection sticker with the hanger having its worst part in plain view..
I probably could just weld a plate or angle iron over the missing piece ,but it'll be risky with it being so close to the fuel tank..to replace the hanger, the bed and fuel tank would need to come off, there is another spot on the frame rain next to that hanger where the original e-brake bracket tore its rivets out of the frame,I made a new cable bracket and bolted it on,but I need to weld up the "slot" in the lower frame rail lip to prevent it from cracking worse in the future..
I want to take the bed and fuel tank off anyways--the sending unit doesn't work, and the tank is probably ready to start leaking sooner than later--the stepside bed is rotting the steps off it,the wood floor is mostly missing,it has aluminum diamond plate over most of its floor..the fenders are junk,it had dual tanks and they rotted all around the gas filler doors and one has a huge imprint of a utility pole on the rear drivers side..bed is dinky too,I cant haul much in it..
I have a flat bed I could fix up and put on it I saved off a '77 GMC I built it for years ago..its pretty rough now though..but its a 900 lb ingot,I may have to think twice about putting it on the now "thinning" frame on the truck..not that I'd be hauling 2 tons in it constantly, but I dont want it breaking the frame--the flat bed's channel iron skeleton would probably beef up the frame too though..
So,does anyone here know of any other sources of a front hanger for the rear spring, besides a junkyard ?..up here chances of finding anything better than mine are slim to none, and most yards wont cut up a frame that is still good enough to use either..
