Hey everyone,

I just purchased a 1991 Suburban 2500 4x4, ans the seller said it needed "a new tail shaft" I clarified, and it is not an axle or anything he described it as
" the tail shaft is the housing where the yoke from your drive shaft goes into and the universal joint connects to the drive shaft "

Being a complete Noob, can someone explain where this is perhaps provide a picture? I am at a loss! I am not sure it is just called a "tail shaft" is there is another name for this part?

thanks in advance! I am happy to be part of such a great, helpful community!

Amazing how easy it is to locate and identify something when you know the true name of the part :-P thanks again! Getting this replaced asap!

If the housing is not broken, the bushing and the lip seal probably need replacing. grab the yoke that goes into the transfer case and see if you can make it move up/down/side to side. If it does it needs to be replaced. There should be trans fluid (pink/ red stuff) leaking out of there too, which means that the transfer case is low on fluid too. The transfer case uses ATF.
