Rear tires lock up before fronts

okay, just got my truck on the road, did tons of work to it, clutch, electric fans and new rad, thermostat fan switch and relay, dual 2.5 inch exhaust, k&n filter, headers yada yada

the thing sat for a few years before i just did a reborn on it the past month, anyways driving it is great!! BUT

when i hit the brakes, the rear locks up before the front, I did replace the main brakeline from the union down to rear axle and put on the 88+ rear brake line( im installing a 4 inch lift soon) I am wondering if the proportioning valve is toast, or if i need to bleed it a better way

how do you bleed your brakes

Right rear, left rear, right front, left front the old fashioned way. Replace the valve thats its purpose.

Get yourself a vacuum bleeder...they make it so much easier. Use the pattern Stomis mentioned.

FWIW: My rear brakes lock up before my fronts. It's a split second, I think the ballance is perfect for my taste. Stock prop valve, 4 wheel discs.

well, the way these are locking up is not right, if i were to stop in a emergency, the rears would lock up long before the fronts, I have a feeling it has to do with the bleeding , and possibly the really old fluid, im hoping the prop valve didnt go bad due to sitting , because that means Ill have to replaced all the metal lines

May just need a brake job in the rear. I've had that happen on two vehicles, and both times the brakes were just shot.

true, turns out the front pads need replacing which will get done tommaro. Ill do that first before i flush the fluid

but in the rear? why would it cause lock up, because its on the pads? if thats the case Ill find a 14 bolt to chuck in it

The rears locking up when they are ready to be changed can have anything to do with the angle they are sitting from auto adjusting with such littler meat, to the rivets digging into the drum, to the springs being weak and not functioning properly. Drums a sloppy, old mess of a design and a house of cards when something goes bad.

Pick-ups always lock up rear first, then fronts...why do you think GM added rear only ABS in '88 with the new body style? My '83 does the same thing.

but this is an abnormal situation, if i have to come to a stop, the rear locks up, the front keeps spinning, ilbeit it is coming to a stop, its just that the rear locks up asap.

Looks like ill pretty foot it around and find a 14 bolt to chuck in it.

Slide under and look at the drums. They are drums right? If you see stains, you may have a leaking axle seal. A little grease or oil on the shoes will make them lock up like mad.

Look at all of your brakes. In the rear, the shoe return springs can break, making them grab really bad. In the front, you might have a hung caliper or two, making them less effective. Or so on... Once you've had a look at all of the brake hardware, then you can start looking at the plumbing.

Lets not forget the weight being shifted to the front under braking hard or normal.
