Dammit
I cut off the stem for my '64 Nova and am using just the base as it holds rubber headliner molding in place. I got a newer style mirror, with night/day flip, and new windshield button.

Cleaned glass with Windex.
Let dry
Used cleaner/applicator wipe on both glass and button (as instructions said)
Let dry 1 minute
1 fat drop of glue and apply pressure 1 minute
Wait 30 minutes before installing mirror (waited an hour, and application temperature was good)

Mirror immediately fell off
Glue was still on button.
Out $10 for the Permatex glue kit
Is Plank mad at me? Glass is different?
Let the glue cure overnight next time?
Don't use a mirror that used to be on a Ford?

Why did you use windex? I think the residue prevented the adhesive from sticking.
Alcohol is better.
I never had in issue with these, did plenty of vehicles.

I cleaned the glass with this:

Did all the other cleaning, activator/ applicator and got the button on. Came out the next day to put the mirror on and where's the button?????

On the floor.
Glue on the button.
If this windshield is original, is there such a thing with old glass not accepting buttons??

Ugh, another $6 in glue kit wasted.

Just have a windshield installer do it. A few places use to do it for free, probably a minimal charge now. Worth saving the headache and you’ll probably end up money ahead by the time you buy all those cleaners and adhesive.

So, is the button coming off the glue or the glue coming off the windshield?
Are you putting the glue within minutes of putting the primer on or waiting too much?
I have only once had an issue out of maybe 6 times.

Glue is on the button, glass is clean.
Directions say wait 1 minute for primer to dry and apply button, holding pressure on button for 1 minute. Normally hold for 2min.

I had the same issue on my Jimmy's rear view mirror. It felt off immediately after attaching the mirror to the glued on button.

I haven't been ambitious enough to try again.

Yup! No shheeet! I had the exact same experience yesterday morning!!! I had a permatex rear view mirror kit in the console for a while… though maybe I should use a fresh one? I bought a new one couple weeks ago.
Yesterday:
-razor blade to windshield.
-cleaned with rubbing alcohol
-cleaned back of button with razor blade but it looked scratched so I ran it over a glass plate with 220, then 400 grit…
-cleaned button with rubbing alcohol.
-followed instructions on permatex package

-cleaner/activator
-one big drop of glue
-held in place for one min
-held in place for another min
-instructions “recommend” letting it sit 30 min (I gave it 2 hours)

Damn thing fell right the F off when I tried to adjust the mirror.

I’ve done this before and never had one fail immediately.

Went wheeling all day with no damn mirror. Had an Xterra trying to follow me up rocky trails and I couldn’t see it doing wheelies cuz I had no damn mirror!!!!!!!!

California probably determined that glue was too good and made Permatex reformulate.
IIRC it’s due to the adhesive sitting on the shelf too long and expiring, which is why I suggested a professional installer who goes through it regularly and always gets a fresh batch.

I have 1 tube if glue from a Permatex Amazon purchase. I'll have to look for a date code. The next kits was from Orielly and it was a tiny bag of glue instead of the tube. I might have that one still as well.

I guess I need to call their helpline for a decoder ring. Or was there a simple way to understand the code?

3H = 201(3)
H = 8th letter of alphabet. August is 8th month

6A = 201(6)
A = January

Ok
Hope 6A is 2026 now lol

I was just about to say that. :waytogo:
That’s the manufacture date, not the expiration date.
Some manufacturers use a 3 digit code like 526 which means the 26th week of 2025.

Who in the HE double toothpicks came up with a date codes anyhow? Why do we need a date “code” when 4 digits gives you the actual month and year? Unless you’re talking food, the day of the month likely doesn’t matter.

I tried the permatex glass kit to reattach the rear quarter sliding glass clasp a few years ago, didn’t last more than one open/close cycle. The clasp is currently located somewhere deep in the center console.

Talking with someone at Permatex. Played phone tag several times before he finally gave me his email address. The only code I can see would suggest Sept 2025. so I'm asking for help. The other kit is illegible.
