so i was given a 12 bolt with better gears than i currently have. since it's sitting in the garage i figured i'd replace the bearings and oil seals before putting it under the truck. both local parts stores just had the "rear wheel repair package bearing" (by timken) which also repositions where the rollers contact the axle. anyone used this before? the whole unit sticks out a 1/4 inch from the axle tube (which is correct according to the directions). and when i put the axle in i have to tap it with a maul the last few inches. just doesn't seem right...any input?

If that's what the directions say, must be correct, also if the bearings are touching in a different location it may stick out a bit more for the new location.

And you say unit.. It's a bearing and seal all in one?? I've never heard of that, sounds kinda neat though. Link?

do NO use those repair units .

seen a few that dont work.

if you do NOT have a problem now fix it the correct way first with reg parts.

yeah...something just doesn't feel right with it, but what do i know, this is the first time i've done it. thrust washers where in bad shape and gotta run to the dealer to get them so i'll probably pick up the oem bearings and seals too

thrust washers for spiders ?

if so on a 12 bolt good luck at dealer.

prob gona be a spider kit from like randys ring/pinion or other dealer.

and why change axle bearings ? thay are good or BAD and you would know if bad. i have hardly ever changed them as a mechanic for over 10 years. lots of seals but no bearings basicly.

thrust washers for side gears, lock rights want em a certain width.

after pulling the axles lots of brown goop came out, pieces floating around in it. 12b been sitting in a yard for a few years. never changed bearings before and figured it'd be good experience and they're pretty cheap...maybe i shoulda left it alone...

read up on lockrights / aka lunch box lockers in 10 bolts and 12 bolts. not the best option as carrier is weak to begin with.

as to swaping bearings you need slide hammer / slide hammer bearing puller attachment for doing axle bearings. then flop in and bang away a few times . the bearings comes right out.

clean up and set new in and tap it in and when started good use old bearing as hammer surface to new.

yeah i have had a lock right in the rear for a while now. i know they're not the best but i needed something and it's performed admirably. got an aussie waiting to go in the front. if/when these axles blow up i'll go the 1 ton route with detroits but in the meantime...i need to wheel!

rented a slide hammer and puller from vato zone, got everything out and one of the bearing units in...just wasn't sure about it

If the axles are good where the bearings ride just use the stock stuff to fix em. Those "all-in-one" units are for damaged axles after a bearing has failed. They are ok and will save you from replacing expensive axles.

And possibly let a worn or damaged axle SNAP, and let the truck crash to the ground!..seen it happen..those "repair" bearings may be OK for a car that never sees off road action or heavy loads, but I'd stick with stock axle bearings and seals if the axles look good where the rollers ride on it..
If the axles are worn,Dorman now sells them aftermarket ,cheaper than factory ones..
