Im puzzled and looking for suggestions>>>>>My trucks a daily driver (was) and I drove it yesterday no problem. Today I back it out of the garage and start forward and I swear I thought I ran over a bike or something. What happened is my right rear wheel locked/froze and left about a 6 inch black mark. I backed up 20ft no problem and went forward and the same thing happened. Odd thing about it is I can feel (vibration) the issue starting and as long as I creep it will not lock. I can't figure this one out. Could it be the tranny (Tranny shifted no problem yesterday and I drove it 100+miles), transfer case? Rear end (Eaton Posi)? Any suggestions/recommendations will help. Thanks!!!!!

ya going backwards i heard resets them(brake shoes),so they could be resetting too far out or just twisting sideways or something.

In the dark ages, backing up was the way to adjust "self adjusting" brakes. If yours is a 76, it's about the right age. Sometimes the adjuster would stick. It's (if I remember correctly) a round gearlike thingy on the piece that holds the shoes together. Just spray the s*** out of it with WD40 or penetrating oil and it should free up.

Just checked the "Bible" (Haynes) the non technical name for the "thingy" is "Adjuster Screw Assembly" and it's on the bottom of the shoes. There may be a plug on the backing plate that you can remove and get a screwdriver in there to manually adjust them.

Thanks for all our your technical advice. I will pull the rear wheel this afternoon and make sure it is properly lubricated. i wll let you know.
thanks

Problem fixed!!!!!!!!!!! Removed the drum, cleaned the brake area, springs etc and lubed the adjuster really well. Took it for a drive hit the breaks and the rear wheel locked up again. But since I've had absolutely no problem and the breaks work better now. I guess the mud from this years hunting season finally shut things down.
