I'm thinking about building a rear winch bumper for my 85 k5 and was wondering if anybody had any pics of some and info/suggestions on building one

This is one I ran for a while. I liked it but I never loved it. It hung too low & stuck out too far.

what about interference with the gas tank? And the mounting brackets? I know you need those bolts for the tailgate rods or whatever you call them

My blazer has a truck gate, so no helper rods. That bumper didn't interfere with stock fuel tank & bolted on in stock location

Not a rear winch bumper design that would work for everybody, but it works for what I do with this rig. The steel winch cable has since been replaced with synthetic rope and thimble.

Same bumper a few years prior...similar place too. Utah Canyonlands..... Had to move the spare tire and water storage to the rear bumper once the camper was installed.

Here is a halfarse picture of the bumper from this past weekend coming back from an early fall fishing trip. Had to get some fall color photos! You can kinda see the new winch rope and thimble.

How well do you like this D rings??? I like the looks of them but I think they would be to noisey.

Ah, yeah, about those…..I don’t like them much. Nothing like having two loud cow bells welded to the rear bumper. :haha: I have a piece of heater hose wrapped around the bottom to help quiet them down a bit but even that doesn’t seem to help much. I don’t recommend using them.

Hey Larry, You buy chance have any pics of the inside fo the winch bumper or under neath?

Also where did you mount the control box and do you have a separate battery or did you run 00 cables all the way back?

When I had my front bumper built, I had a receiver hitch built into it and ive got one in the back bumper. I took my winch and mounted it on a winch plate and 2" square tubing and basically made my winch portable. So I can use it on the front or back and I can take it off when Im just cruising around town.

I've thought about getting a winch in the rear. Even had the shop put extra space for it, ya know, just in case I change my mind...

But as it stands, I think the goal is to go forward, not backward... Not to mention the added weight.

The D rings never bothered me. Prob cuz it's so darn loud already from the 3" exhaust, Flow Masters, no carpet, and red neck open air intake...

Huh? Did you say something?

Here is a shot from underneath. The control box is mounted right to the winch motor. I can’t remember the exact size of the cable but I think it is 00. It is really fat around 5/8 or so in diameter. The cable runs from the battery all the way down the frame to the winch. I do not have the cable connected to power all the time. I just hook it up when the winch is needed. That much cable running down the frame scares me to leave connected all the time. The biggest problem with the winch on the rear is the winch control cable would not reach the cab so I installed a wireless remote, which works well so far outside of the second or two delay when pressing the wireless remote buttons.

The solenoid relay box crapped out this summer so while the winch was out I replaced the wire rope with Viking synthetic winch rope. Much lighter and easier to man handle.

ok so I see you mounted the winch facing out instead of down. Do you have your fairlead bolted to the top tow bolts or the bottom two bolts?

looks like the top two.

Hehe, I guess it depends which way you look at it. Keep in mind this is a front winch bumper that has been flipped upside down and tweaked to work on the rear. The old fairlead and new hoss are fastened with the upper winch mount bolts (or lower if the bumper was flipped and on the front). Before mounting the winch upside down I contacted Smitybilt to get their thoughts on mounting their winch upside down where they said no problem at all.

Many moons ago, my rear winch bumper was on the front of my buddies Suburban. Then before that it was on his J20 and ’78 Dodge Warlock. In this picture here the bumper was just install on the burb and has not been finished up yet. He sold the burb then gave me the bumper where we reworked it again to fit the rear.
