I have read about the wiring going bad, about the motor going bad, about the switch going bad etc..... this symptom wise seems to be none of the above. Intermittently over the last week, the window won't roll up. You can use the button on the dash or the key with the same results.

When it happens, if you turn the key to roll it down, the motor engages. When you go to roll it up, nothing. Let is sit for a while and try it again.... rolls up perfect with either method.

Any idea first things to check to diagnose what would cause it to work intermittently? I will likely swap it over to full manual window this summer when I get time but in the midst of moving houses and moving my shop so I am hoping for a quickish fix for it to get it reliable before a full summer tear down of it.

Thanks!!!

Check the safety lockout switch located on the inside of the tailgate at the latch on the driver’s side. Common for these to go bad. It’s purpose is to only supply power to the window if the gate is closed so the window doesn’t operate in the down position.

Ha,I was just about to post could it be the lockout switch. :) I will check that.... also would love other options in the event it is not that.....

I have the same problem with one of my windows and I cleaned the contacts on the switch and it works fine now.
It had a bad contact so it overheated the switch.

Does anyone know where to get a replacement one of those switches in the event it is the culprit (which would be logical)? Called both brothers and LMC and both told me they did not have it. If they are not much, I will just order one to have it. I know I can bypass it..... but with a 4 yr old that is "button happy" be good to have it actually installed. Thanks!!

Probably something that can be fixed, either a loose or corroded wire. It could just need to have the screws that hold it in place to be tightened. Or as mentioned, if the contacts are corroded they can be cleaned with some fine sandpaper.

Had this same issue in my 78. It ended up being the wiring. I had to run a new hot back. Does it have the same issue when using the key switch?

A lot of my wiring has aged and is need of replacement. Wiper motors had the same issue...

For the tailgate safety switch, it's pretty easy to clean up and get it working again. Just remove it from that side of the tailgate, take it apart and polish the contacts. Like new again.

The keyswitch is the one that's a real pain to get out.

Going to try messing with it tomorrow. Been heads down at work this week. Yes, same issue from either the key or the dash switch. Tells me that the lock out is the likely culprit.
