New here and looking for some advice. I just bought a '90 K5 and the rear window will go up approximately 1/2 way then I need to push the top half in before it will close all the way. The controls work from the dash switch but not from the key. Just wondering if anyone else has had any issues like this and how to go about fixing it.

Thanks in advance.

I would take a shot in the dark and say the issue is worn parts or hard dry lube on the regulator. The key not working is probably the switch. There is a write up with pics on the tailgate window/regulator on one of the forums.

Here ya go! http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296615

OH, welcome to the madhouse! Get a paid membership, it's well worth the $25

Just for kicks…. .. spray some wd40 or something inside of the back key hole.... jiggle the key back and forth. Also push the tailgate inward towards the truck while you are jiggling the key back and forth. Open and close the tailgate a few times and try again.

This worked on mine… my key hole never worked in the beginning.. I spayed it a few times over a month period. Then one day I put the key in the hole to show a friend how it would NOT work…. And it started working for the first time… go figure. It has worked ever since that day.

If you really get into it, you can "repair" the key switch sometimes.

Mine had crudded up contacts, fixing that it worked ok for awhile, but now randomly decides it will or won't work with the key.

this is how I solve most problems :thumb: before doing anything, I say out loud it's not going to work, and it works :D

Well I figured out why my window wasn't working with the key, the electrical connection had been unplugged. So one mystery solved. The window still stops half way up, even after silicone spray on the window gasket. The tail gate is sticking out a little too far on the drivers side. Is there a way to adjust this?

gotta pull the inside panel and start looking for something loose or not lining up. Might be time to rip her open

Can you push in or pull up on the glass and get it to go up? The strikers are adjustable.

I can push IN and it will continue up. But the key has since stopped working (short lived solution) I think K85 is right, its time to rip the sucker open and see whats going on in there.

Mine just started deciding to jam about halfway up randomly, I expect its something to do with the rollers on the track.

While my buddy was welding patches into my floor a few weekends ago we had a sudden rainstorm and he noticed that my rear window external seal was REALLY leaking so he advised me to get a new one, which I did. We tried to install it with the glass still in place but that looked like it was gonna be a bear, so we unbolted the glass and pulled it out. I decided that was the best time to do a little repair and maintenance. Took a wire brush and got as much of the rust off the channel holding the glass as possible. Also took the window tracks (where the bushings ride) out, wire brushed them and soaked them with lithium grease. I remember a previous post where someone had taken the entire key assembly out and I decided that now was the best time to attempt that. I loosened the 4 bolts holding the regulator in place and slid it toward the truck about an inch and I could see the 2 nuts holding the assembly in. I removed these and the whole assembly came right out. I disassembled it and took note that the contacts were BLACK with corrosion. So took the wire brush and some sand cloth, cleaned them all up, coated everything with dielectric grease and put it all back together. Low and behold!!!! The key now works in the rear window. I still had the problem with the window needing a jiggle about 1/2 way up and figured out that the window channel had a rust spot where it would hit the bottom edge of the window motor, gave that a little pull and all is right as rain now.
So I would like to thank you guys for all your assistance.

I was amazed when i tore into mine and just a good spray with some white lithium grease, and the darn thing shot up so fast i thought it was gonna crack the glass! :woot:
