I put a tailgate on my 76 k5 off a 89 k5. Guy didn't have the key for it and my 76 door key doesn't work it. My question is would it be cheaper to go to a locksmith and have a key made for it or just buy a whole new lock cylinder for it.

I would price it both ways and see. Sometimes locksmiths can be overpriced IMO. The door cylinders are fairly cheap, not sure about the tailgate cylinder. I'll see if I can find one.

Found one on LMC. Part #9 in the drawing. Looks like it would be around $120. Might be cheaper to go to a locksmith.
The door cylinders are only $20 or so

I'm looking at part #3 in the manual rear window section. I think the one you pointed out is for an electric window. Says 20 bucks for the manual one. Is that the right part? Think that is cheaper than any locksmith would be?

I just assumed it had the electric since it was out of an 89. If it's a manual crank, then yes the $20 will be the one. That's cheap and I would go that route.

If you go to the local junkyard and grab a couple handfuls of GM door keys, at least one of them is very likely to work.

That's an idea right there except most of the cars at my local yard have either only the ignition key in them or no keys at all. Might be worth a try though.

I have pulled the lock cylinder out of door locks and brought them to a lock smith, they can de-code the lock by the letters stamped on them and cut a new key...last time I did one they charged me 10 bucks plus the cost of the key, about 3 bucks, but it was quite a few years ago..I think you can do the same to a tailgate lock cylinder..

Too bad you aren't close to my town--I have two huge key rings with probably 200+ GM keys I collected during my junkyard job,I haven't had to bring many locks to lock smiths in quite a long time..only one door lock on one truck I had, refused to work with any of my "spare" keys...so I had to pull the cylinder and have one made..
