before i pull the trigger on a new motor i just wanted to double check that to test it, if i run a (+)and a (-) off a 12v battery, and connect it to the to prongs on the motor, it should move up or down.

i did it and got nothing, switched to polarity and still nothing, no clicks or hums or nothing.

i replaced it a few years ago, didnt think id have to replace it 3 years later

Ground is the case, 2 terminals at connection are one for up and one for down.
Pos at either of those and neg at case.

^ Yep.
The way you're doing it you will release the magic smoke and it'll no longer work. The rear window motor is very simple and serviceable. Only 4 long bolts hold it together. The only things I can see going wrong with it are burned windings which you can check by measuring resistance (should only be a couple ohms). The contacts where the brushes ride may just need cleaning with rubbing alcohol. Or you may need to grease the bushings the rotor rides on. If the brushes are worn you can replace them, but I haven't looked to see where to get new ones. If you do find it's a bad motor then I'm interested in it.

if i had any electrical confidence i would give this a shot, but time is money and with my luck i will be throwing that motor down the street, scaring the neighbors with and expletive laced rant. im just gonna cut my losses and order a new one. i would give it to you but there is a core charge

Obviously you're having electrical issues with you're rear window. The most likely culprit is the safety switch located at the latch on the driver side. Bypass that and see if the window works.

yea i went to go bypass it and found that the previous owner had done it already. i just ordered a new rocker switch and all the relays and wire, gonna replace everything i can so hopefully i can stop worrying about the reliability of my hunting rig.

im just starting to wish i had all manual doors and windows.

I got sick of the electric motors in my 89. I just switched the doors to manual. Way faster and way more reliable. I am thinking of making the rear window manual as well. Just one less thing to worry about.

Hey guys, been a long time since anyone asked a question so here goes. If the rea rtailgate motor goes in one direction and not the other does that mean that the motor is bad ot can the motor be repaired. I replaced the switch and it seems to go down but not up. You think it is the repaired switch or could it be the motor. THanks Dave

To test the motor disconnect the connector going to it. Ground is the motor case. Both of the terminals are positive so depending which terminal you apply 12V to determines the direction. Have you tried operating it with the key in the gate or just the dash switch?
And yes, they’re easy to rebuild. I really need to make a tutorial on how to do that. :doah:

Hi, thanks for you rreply. I lost the key for the door and tailgate so thats my next project is how to rekey the locks. Thanks, much appreciated. Dave

Which direction does it go? Did you read the previous suggestions in this thread? Hint: safety switch
