Rear Window Part K5

Does anyone know what the blockout rod is supposed to do in the rear window assembly? I noticed that mine was just dangling there and I found a spring that has broken. Everything seems to funtion correctly.

I believe that prevents you from opening the tailgate unless the window is down. Been so long I can't remember for sure.
