Hey I'm new to this forum and I signed up because I'm having problems with the rear window of my 1982 chevy
k5. I rolled down the rear window this morning and when I tried to toll it back up it wouldnt. I could hear the moter running fine but the window wouldnot roll up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou

If you can hear the motor run, I'd suspect the cable has issues.

At least the window is down, so you can open the tailgate. Open it, unscrew the large plate on the inside of the gate, and unscrew the cable from the motor. Turn the cable with vise grips or the like, see if you you can get the window to move.

I'd suspect it's the transmission that the cable connects to. There's a nylon gear inside it that tends to break. And instead of using vise grips use a drill since it's reduced by gears and will take several turns to move the window any noticeable amount.

Unscrew the cable from the motor. On the cable there's a square shaft that you can put your drill chuck on. If that doesn't move the world Dow the. It's probably a busted gear in the transmission. You can verify this by disconnecting the other end of the cable at the transmission to see if the cable spins at both ends, but that'd be hard to do with the window in the down position.

The red circle is where the cable connects to the motor.
You can follow that cable and see where it connects to the transmission at the top of the tailgate on the passenger side (lower right in the pic).

Good info to know, I have the sneaking suspicion I will have to do this.

If it's the transmission, they are junk-yard only if I remember. Last I looked, I don't think anybody was selling new ones.

You are really lucky the window is down. If it was up, you'd be doing this job laying on your side inside the truck in the fetal position. With that said, you're going to have to slide the window out to remove the transmission and/or cable. There are 4 7/16" bolts at the bottom of the window sash - 2 on each side. Gonna be a little tight to get the them, but it's possible. Remove those and slide your window out manually until you can access the little gearbox. Be sure to support the window on the outside with a sawhorse or something.

SAFETY EDIT!: When you pull that gearbox off, the regulator spring is going to swing the arms into the 'window up' position very violently and try to cut your hand off (ask me how I know). Be sure to pin the regulator into position to keep it from swinging or have a buddy hold the arms and let them up in a controlled fashion. If your window is still partioally in and the arms go to chopping, it could break the window also.
