My damn rear window switch will only roll it down but not up. I hooked power to the motor and it worked up and down. I read in another thread about the safety switch but can find it or a diagram for it. Also the window when powered goes up fast but down slow. Any suggestions would help.

I have the same problem and just today I was trying to figure it out. It rolls up fast but very slow down. I cut the wires and reversed it and it goes up slow and down fast. Then I got a 3 way switch and placed power direct froma source and it works great just slow going up and ast going down. If i use the switch from inside the cab it only works going up but not down. Any suggestions fellas.

After i posted the question, found some more threads.. i will look for the safety switch on both sides. As for bypassing it, any downsides..

Most likely the switch in the rear tailgate. Should be visible and the far drivers hand side of the tailgate when you remove the inspection plate. It is basically there so you don't roll the window up when the gate is in the down position. Make a jumper with 2 male spade connectors to bypass it.

I have this problem too, and I just take the wire from one side of the switch and swap it back and forth. I've replaced the switch before, and that didn't work, so I'm guessing it's the wire running from front to back.

What safety switch are you talking about? If the saftey switch was bad, wouldn't it not work in either direction at any time?

It is inside the tailgate. It is at the drivers side latch. It detects when the latch is shut so the window can not be rolled up when the tailgate is in the down position. The switch is only tied into the "up" wire. I just had to bypass mine last week, because my window would only roll down, not up. This is a common problem.

My 76 will roll up, and pretty fast, but many times when I press the cab switch, it won't roll down at all. It is hit and miss. Somebody said once that the motor is grounded by its' mount on the tailgate and if the connection isn't clean, then it can ground out. Maybe somebody more electrically inclined can pipe in on this one.

I just found out why my 86' balzer was having this problem about 2 months ago. I was the switch inside the tail gate. I just bypassed it and called it good.

To bypass it, I'm assuming you just splice the wires together?

Thanks!

Same problem over here too.

Gotta love CK5

I pulled the safety switch apart a few years ago and cleaned it up. It has worked good ever since then. If you ever want to roll up the window with the tailgate down (i.e. to work inside the tailgate), all you have to do is flip the latch over to close the switch. I admit that the odds of rolling it up when you shouldn't are low, so the switch probably isn't necessary. The keyswitch on the tailgate likes to fail as well, but you *probably* won't have both the front and rear switches failing at the same time.

IMO, the wiring that runs the length of the truck is undersized for this task, but the windows do work acceptably if the tracks are good, the motor is good and the switches are in good shape.
The odds of the switch failing are highest when you are away from home and the weather is bad, of course.
