after installing a lift on my 90 k5 ive been hearing a clanking possibly grinding noise from the rear of the truck. The noise only happens when its coasting and the higher the speed the louder the sound. Ive been looking around havent found anything obvious even changed the u-joints "just in case" and still nothing so i think it may be coming from the rearend? but i have no idea and my knowledge of differentials and such is limited so i figure i will pull the rear cover and look for anything wrong! Any ideas or comments? and anything inparticular to look for? any help would be awesome! thanks!

driveline is stock to my knowledge. 2.5 inch lift but for whatever reason the rear springs are 4 inch "its what made the truck sit level" i have no idea why? and driveline angle to me doesnt look bad the springs have a corrective shim on them not sure if more is needed? im new to all this so i may sound ignorant but im learning!

your description of "clanking" makes me think driveline more than rear diff. Check your front shaft at the transfer case output to see if its hitting the cross-member. Look at the edges of your u-joint yokes for signs of binding as well.

If you have never pulled the cover on your axle then "might as well" see what's in there and put some fresh fluid in.

Check your tranny and motor mounts. I had the same problem and that had a lot to do with it.

well today i crawled under and checked things out, no signs of any binding or rubbing, motor mounts look ok not sure as to what to look for other than cracks? pulled the rear diff cover things look fine no chunks of metal or any thing and gears look good other than a few signs of wear which i assume is normal. so no luck yet but i did figure out the gear ratio which i was curious about!

A clank and a grind are 2 different noises. A grinding during coast and louder as speed increases is backlash in the ring and pinion. But look for the obvious first. I had a friend bring his truck to me complaining about some noises, one hub lock was engaged.
