I am about to have to do a complete rebuild on my front end. What should I be looking for as far as replacing stuff? I know bearings and ball joints and stuff but, what other normal stuff needs to be replaced?

Also is 1000 reasonable to rebuild a motor? I need to do this too, blowing smoke, loss of power... just tired in general. If it is goign to go much over that I am going to get a junkyard 5.3 and tranny and fit it in my rig.

Any help is appreciated.

Dont skimp on price with the ball joints. I did that and mine wore out in less than a year. switched them out with some high quality ones and they are still tight since i replaced them 2 years ago. learn from my mistakes. pay a little more for the good stuff.

What size engine are we talking here? If it is a 350 I would say that is reasonable for a complete rebuild. But, you need to know what parts are being replaced, what parts reconditioned, are replacement parts all new or reconditioned? All of these are questions to ask.

yeah its a 350. NOt sure everything that needs to be replaced or reconditioned. It suppossedly only has 50000 on the new motor(was a crate GM replacement) but I know for sure that the previous owner ran it low on fluids more than just a few times. When I picked it up i had to put in 3 1/2 quarts just to get home.

That may require resurfacing of the crank, depending on wear, or even replacement of the crank. Heads will need to be done based on the oil burning, pretty common. I would say that $1k is a good deal, but hopefully 4x4High will chime in with his opinion as he has a lot more experience in this area. I tend to buy GMPP engines and drop them in.

djkawas...you mentioined good quality ball joints. Do you have a suggestion on P/N's and where to get them? I've had mine replace twice in three years and think that the shop that replaced them didn't use anythting other than stock replacements.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Everything you need to know about ball joint replacement on these trucks, with a good parts summary in the last post:

Are you rebuilding the motor yourself or having someone do it for you? I think I spent around $500-600 rebuilding mine. Fairly simple to do, just like rebuilding a briggs and straton just with more cylinders LOL. These motors are fairly low tech.

Outsourcing to a shop. I was going to do it myself buuuut I have found less time to do it and I need this back on the road as its my daily driver.
