what am i rebuilding and why.

the case has been apart by a previous owner whom i cannot contact.
all the bearings are good, any way to check chain slop without the thing assembled?
how would i see chain wear?
and how much beefier is the HD chain, this one looks kinda stout, like 5 links wide or so.

THanks guys

If the chain gets bad you will know it pretty quick. They don't usually just break. You will hear it hitting the case if it is streched out pretty bad.

i usually check the chain by pulling the drin plug or fill plug and pushing on the chain.

ok, bttt, what kind of deflection do you look for in the chain.

I would like to know this too. Is there some "play" in the chain? I just bought a 241 from ebay and in 4HI you can hold the transfer case input shaft and rotate the front or rear outputs about 1/32 of a turn or so....

thank you.
is there a site with good info on it, or is that just common knowledge /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
