so I broke a couple of teeth of my rear ring gear. I have a 10bolt (i know upgrade, but its not in the budget) and I got new ring and pinion with everything to redo it. However I have begun taking the axle apart and I can't get the center section out. I have removed the axles and the caps, is there somthing im missing or a trick to getting it out?

10 bolt and you are rebuilding it?
no need to upgrade, for the price you paid for the gears, you could have had another similar axle and you'd be already driving it.:dunno:
But if you already are in it, you need a case spreader or pry out out with pry bars, it's in there tight.

X2 on the prybars. Usually get the end right behind one of the ring gear bolts and pry against the case. It'll come out.

ok thanks I will try that. I would have replaced the axle but mine is geared to 4.56 and i searched through the junkyards and couldnt find one. figure im only out 180 if i cant do it and then the truck will just sit till i can upgrade.

Put a wrench on one of the ring gear bolts and spin the pinion until the wrench hits the housing, works everytime.

ok so i tried everything that was suggested and still no luck. So now the axle is out of the truck to try that way. Could the po had used too many shims putting it in and thats why it wont come out? or are they just in there super tight?

They are supposed to be in there fairly tight, hence the case spreader. It can be done without one, you couldn't get the carrier out by putting a wrench on a ring gear bolt and turning the pinion?

tried it again and it worked thanks!! now when I put it back together when setting up the shims and tooth patterns will it be easier to get in and out or should I just reuse the old shims (kept them seperate and labeled)?

It's best to keep track of the old configuration and use it as a starting point for setup of the new gears.

easiest way is to reuse the same shims and try a pattern and see how it looks.then adjust from there.if youre lucky, itll be good with no adjustments.
