ive got an 86 jimmy, just installed a rebuilt th400 and np205. i had a 700r4 with a 208 prior. i started the truck up, put it into gear and nothing happens. what could be the problem? the TC was primed and good to go. can anyone help me? any advice would be great!!!

not trying to be a smartass, but is the torque convertor bolted up, enough fluid added, I believe a T400 takes like about 12 qts empty.
who did the rebuild?
were they mated together when you got them?

are you sure the stick out of the output shaft of the T-400 is correct for the adaptor and the 205 ??

I mean.....are you sure the output of the trans is engaged into the input shaft of the 205 ?

:dunno:

what do you mean by nothing happens?

does it make a noise?
can you hear anything spinning?
is the shifter connected?
how much fluid is in it?

the tranny and tcase were rebuilt at powershift in woodenville wa. the tranny was built for the 205 case. the tc is bolted up. i put 12qts fluid in it. when i put the truck into gear, absolutely nothing happens. no sound comes from the tranny, no change in RPM. nothing. i didnt get a chance to do anything with the truck today. tomoro ill double check the shift linkage and everything

HMMM.

When shifted the shifter pulls(basically) a small hydraulic valve to the open position(and closes others)

time to pull the pan, see whats going on.

Or, you could hook up a pressure gauge see what kind of pump pressure you have

Does the trans try to grind when you put it back into park? If not, then you are getting no drive through the trans. Possible problems: Broken pump gear from conver being installed incorrectly, filter tube fell out of pump, or even left off, pressure regulator valve stuck or blown out of pump housing, manual valve on valve body not engaged with internal linkage.

Thats what I'm gonna guess.

easy test to see if pump working. motor off. check fluid level in atf. note level.

fire up motor recheck the tranny level. if no change then pump not spinning.

then go from there.

did you slide the trans flush with the block when you put it back in ???

Or did you use bolts in the bellhousing to pull it up flush??

If the converter is not in properly, the drive ears on the converter stacks solid against the pump drive tangs as the converter contacts the flywheel and the pilot hub in the crankshaft.....

tightening the trans to the block drives the converter into the pump and destroys it....

If I remember correctly,,, when to converter is installed into the front pump correctly...it should measure 1 3/16 " from the edge of the bellhousing mounting surface to the flywheel mounting pads on the installed converter.

Once the trans is installed you should have plenty of room to pull the converter forward before it touches the flexplate....If it was stacked solid when you bolted up the converter to the flexplate you probably damaged the front pump...

its the converter. when installing the 400, i used the tc from the 700r4 because my buddy said itd work "just fine".......ugh...stupid mistake...im pulling the tranny thursday to inspect everything and put the proper tc in....hopefully nothing is ruined!!!! thanks for the tips tho everyone!! with any luck bigugly will be ready to run thursday afternoon!!

your buddy is 1 stupid jacka$$ . . . how is a 3 spline lockup convortor gona work in a 2 spline non lockup tranny. ?

and never reuse a old convortor on a reman tranny . the old unit will be full of junk and and when fired up will pump junk in to the fresh reman tranny.

if it was a th350 then yes convortor would have worked.

If you used a 700 converter you should have been pumping fluids out the front of that trans like no other since there is a huge difference in seal and bushing diameter, but the pump has to be turning to make pressure.Better shine a light into the pump and make sure the center gear still has two undamaged drive tangs. The 700 converter is so much shorter than the 400 you may have dodged a bullet and not even touched the pump gears....maybe.

i got the tranny dropped, but should there be any reason why the 700 converter is not sliding out? i can move in back and fourth about 1/4 inch or so but it refuses to come out. thanks for all the help everyone!!
