Here's some pictures of the recessed winch front bumper I'm building. Looking for ideas and input. I'm trying to keep the truck as short as possible. Recessed the winch about half way and can still operate the disengage lever from top. If I went all the way in it would be almost impossable to operate and I would have to move oil cooler and trans cooler lines.

1/4 plate all around, recessed tow hitch, hooks will mount on sides with bolt through the frame. Then add the tube bumper, two inch main bumper and 1/1/2 supports.

Did you mount the winch with the feet forward? Looks like you did. If so did you just remove the screws from the end plate with the lever and then rotate it so that the lever was back on top again? What winch is that one also.

Yes, yes and yes! :D Warn M8000

Looks nice, mine is mounted in a similar fashion but I had to notch the frame for the winch motor. Im using a warn xd9000i though.

How about just pushing it back, you install it 'behind' the bumper?
Possible with your set up?

Here's my Warn stuffed between the frame rails.
Everything is behind the stock bumper with stock mounting retained.

The only problem with that design is that you can't see the cable to know if there are any issues. I love the idea of having the winch nearly invisible behind the stock bumper, but you need to be able to see the cable. And, what winch do you have in there?

It's a Warn CE XD9000i.

You can see the spool/cable if you pop the hood a small amount but seeing it when winching wouldn't help much anyway, if it's pulling hard from the side there's nothing to be done about it most of the time and when your free spooling it in, if the guy guiding the cable doesn't know enough to keep the cable even on the spool, he shouldn't be on the cable in the first place.

To date, I've never even had anybody ask 'where's the lever' let alone complain about not being able to physically see it.

Not saying that seeing it wouldn't be easier but just relating that so far it's never been an issue at all.

There are times however that you CAN see it pretty good...:D

Fair point though.

Definitely not trying to bad mouth your design, just curious about that. Seen way too many people that don't understand how to properly spool the line back in. And thank you for the information on the winch.

Last part of the hijack: Did you have to modify the frame to fit that winch in there?

No frame mods, in fact I put thing's back to stock when I did it.
It had a big winch bumper on the front prior to this mod, it's why I did it, it was killing to approach angle bad.

In the first pic you can see that I cut back to start again.
I cut off a front section from another frame to mock thing's up.

Did you gusset the 1/4" plate? You might reconsider the front winch mounting plate itself to something thicker than 1/4". With the feet mounted forward, you are putting a lot of force on that plate and you will be pulling against the weakest area of the plate.

There are a lot of 1/4" winch mounts, but they mount the winch feet down. I used 1/2" plate on a feet forward winch mount similar to yours and I SUBSTANTTIALLY gussetted it. And I still BENT it.

If you do keep it, I would run a few horizontal gussets across the front or box the top and bottom of the mount to reinforce it.

Here's a pic of a bumper we built for Stan1688. Although this picture doesn't show it complete, it has the winch mount integrated into the bumper brackets and the winch fits under the core support.

There are four gussets across the front bottom. Top will be slightly boxed and then the main bumper, 2 inch .120 wall will also be across the top.

Yes there is room there but I would have to move the oil cooler and trans cooler lines. Approach angle is a concern, I did loose some like this. Reasons I wanted to access disengage from front top are 3 back surgeries and we wheel deep snow often up here. I did not want to have to go under to use the winch.

I also didin't like the winch up higher out front. Blocks all the air to radiator and coolers and makes the truck a foot or so longer.

Looks to me like you can fab up another for "others"...

I used the take out frame for mock up and then cut it down and used it for the application.
Only used the front 6" of the frame horn but it's all cut up eitherway.
