im gettin one for the wife. i dont know anything about them. i want somthing simple and affordable. i figure first hand experience is better than magazine write-ups
thanks guys

I have a garmin Nuvi 200W and LOVE it... do a search, it's been discussed before...

I have a TomTom One and love it but could use more detailed maps and what not for off roading and not being able to save a route is kinda lame but its simple and easy ive had it over 2 years now and no issues

for the wife get one of those tomtoms or nuvi. I like the nuvi a little bit more but they're pretty close.

I have dealt with both the Nuvi and the TomTom versions, and I really like both. They are pretty comparable on functionality, and ease of use.

If it were me, I would probably get the Nuvi, since my wife seemed to like that one a bit more. It was about $160 the last time I looked at a Nuvi 200, so they are pretty inexpensive and very accurate.

Does the Nuvi 200W support offroad backwoods stuff or does it only have road maps.

Just road trip stuff, but it does it really well. If it's for the road and or wife - it's the best one.

Are there offroad map software that can be uploaded to the Nuvi 200W?

I have a tomtom one and I have a garmin. Garmin IMO is better, I dont know about the lower models but Garmin sells different maps for their products, so if you want off road maps its as easy as swapping in a memory stick with the off road maps. One thing I dont like about the tomtom one is it doesn't have text to speach so it wont tell you street names. You get what you pay for though think I paid $100 for the tomtom.

Looks like it's available for the Nuvi200 but with limitations I don't know what those limitations are you might call them and ask. Best to deal with them directly. They are very helpful and know there products.

For offroad software you cant beat the good old laptop.

I have mine setup with my garmin legend handheld receiving off the satellites. It feeds the info on the fly to my laptop. I use Memory Map with topographical maps for offroad and microsoft streets and trips for onroad.

I dont know any plug and play unit that can do both but I just got into this deal.

I have two GPS units:

A Garmin Nuvi 760
A Garmin 60CSx

The Nuvi is phenomenal, and does pretty much everything, and is easy to use. It is a well thought out design, has great features (find me a truckstop near here, etc) and is nicely expandable. Heck, it even has bluetooth and will answer your phone for ya! :)

THe 60CSx is for hiking. It does better "mapping" things, and it more for Geocaching and back country stuff. You can input coordinates, download maps, etc. For just driving around, in my opinion, you cannot beat the Nuvi. I have only owned a 760, but I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Not really but it does show a "terrain" style map when you go off-road. There is actually a setting for when you leave the pavement and when it's turned on it doesn't try to get you back on the pavement... it just lets you roam and uses coordinates...
I've marked a few locations out in the dunes and when I want to go back to them I just click on it and tell it off-road and it'll point me in the right direction... like a fancy compass with a mileage countdown until you get right on top of the coordinate...

But according to their website you can buy the off road maps for it.

I'm sure you can but I'm talking about how it comes when you pop it out of the box.... for what I do it works....
