The beloved 91 Sub is going into my shop for an overhaul. It suffers from the bad paint syndrome of the 1990's. I'm leaning towards a "rhino lining" type product for the exterior paint. A few questions;

1. I'm looking at having the entire exterior dustless blasted to bare metal.
pro's- very fast at removing the old paint/primer without warping.

con's- It would all need to be primed very soon afterwards and the blasting costs $250 an hour.

2. DA sand it one section at a time myself, use the money saved for materials.

Having the blasting do e would be awesome, but might be overkill for do etching that's getting rhino lined.

I'd go the DA route myself, but those materials can add up fast too.

That truck is so clean, I wouldn't even think of paying someone to blast it. you've got maybe a day of sanding total if you take your time to get it clean. if there is any pitting at all, you can buy a hopper fed sandblaster for about 50 bucks and a bag of sand and that should do the whole thing. Spray it with epoxy primer after and you will get another 20+ years.

fyi any blasting you need to watch the heat from blasting . it will warp panels and if there is a dent in the panel it will make it 5x worse.

ask me how I know this stuff. . . . :whistle:

but if the right blasting system and material is used with a person who knows what there doing you will be fine. :D

I did this short box each side with 80 grit on a 6" da sander and took me over 3hrs per side and my hand / arm was numb for hr's after .

check my 2wd build link in my sig line for my stripped body repaint job for just a glims of the work ahead for you .

Brush on paint stripper, pressure wash the mess off. DA the stubborn parts.

Buy beer.

The Jasco paint stripper stuff at HD works well on the floor sealer stuff at my work. (think clear wood sealer, two coats) Plus it washes up with water, but the bulk of it needs to be deposed of properly.

Depending on what outcome you want will lead you in the direction. For mine, quick sand and Rustolium painted. Stuff looks great for not even trying.
