Hi All,

I'm looking to buy a new transmission for my 86 K5 Blazer. It's a 350 engine with a Holley Sniper EFI kit installed. Current transmission is a 700R4. I would prefer to buy a new transmission rather than trying to do another rebuild on this one.

Looking for recommendations for brand/model/etc. and if anyone knows a good place I could order one from.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

The 700R-4 transmission is discontinued, so AFAIK reman is the only option.

Go check out preformabuilt, heavy hauler 700r4. That’s what I have now. It shifts great and runs cool. And good warranty too.

They also have a extreme 4x4 for rock crawlers and mud guys, but for what I do down here, mostly running on the beach towing my little trailer, they said the hauler for me.

Does no one like bowtie overdrives anymore? I've been very happy with mine, but I don't see much mention of them anymore. I have heard good things about Monster, also, but have no first hand experience.

Phoenix transmission in Weatherford, TX. They’re something like 30 weeks out though, get in line…

I only use “4L60” cases, not 700R4’s. This was the last update that came out around 1988. There is an auxiliary valve body and other upgrades that make it much more desirable than a 700R4.

“K” case 4L60’s can be found in 2wd S10 Blazers with the 4.3 v6. Just swap in a 4x4 output shaft when you rebuild…

I have "built" 700R4 that Trans Action in Sun Valley CA (Los Angeles) built for me a few years back. Excellent performance. Be sure to put an external trans cooler in line with the factory radiator unit. Synthetic trans oil is the way to go. Brad @ 818-504-6262

While I agree @Greg Ducato , is the best way to go. If time frame is an issue, try The Toy Shop, Pomona, Ca. Kendall is the guy, 1 man shop, only does GM transmissions.
He did my sick 700r4 in Dec 2018, have 15k plus miles many towing in the south west, in a heavy ass k20 burb with mild built 355 in front.

I got some work done by the Toy Shop a few years back on a Tahoe I had. I was a little worried when I pulled up and was met by the dog but no one else. Finally, Kendall came wandering out and we talked a bit. Still seemed a little fishy, but the place had come highly recommended by a friend. Two days later, I was back picking up the Tahoe, completely rebuilt the trans, and 115k later, it hasn't had even one issue. Dude knows his transmissions....I would also second the recommendation to use a good external cooler and stick with synthetic fluid.
I think in the end, there are probably great trans shops all over the country. Never seem to be close to where you are, but you just have to find one that will stand behind what they build. See what kind of warranty they will give you, that's usually a good indicator of how well it's built!
