thanks SweetK30, that's the answers I'm lookin for. for the ATF - is ATF 4 what you're recommending? or some dextron type

The th350 will only take about 3-4 quarts on a service, though. 12 is when filling new trans.

when atf is made better it can go backwards fine but not forwards.

like dextron 3 will do 3-2-1 specs . but not dextron 2 up to 3 .

and the old stuff we run would be dexron 1 or 2 so yes dextron 3 will be fine.

Ohhhhhh! my brain hurts. Chris and SweetK30 why the big difference between a new tranny and a service fluid change on a tranny? Are you only really changing out 1/4 of the oil when you change your tranny fluid?

Pretty much. The torque converter stays full, and some fluid doesn't drain from parts of the valve body and housing. If it all drained down, the trans would overflow all over the ground out of input, output, or dipstick seals, just like my K20 does if I leave it sit too long without running.:doah:

Yeah. Also note that the assumption is you drop the pan, drain what comes out fast, change the filter, and then reverse it and fill it back up ASAP.

I did my Tracker's auto trans a few years ago and ended up letting it sit over night draining. Imagine my surprise the next morning when the thing took the whole 8 quarts or so it said to fill it from empty and not the 3 quarts I had sitting there for a pan drop and filter change.

Oh, and I like Valvoline stuff. They've got Dextron III and IV out now and either should be good for a TH350 and a NP208. Don't think Dextron II was even out when the TH350 was being put in trucks.

If your engine has lower miles and doesn't leak, I'd run 5w30 in it, but that is me. My owners manual in my 91 suggested it, and it's all I run.

Yep. Every 350 or V8 gasser I've been around has recommended 5w30.

btw the 208 take 4.5 quarts not 2
the 10bolt takes just under 3 quarts

so I finally got around to installing a Rockcrusher diff cover on my 14 bolt, and of-course the bolt holes weren't exactly lined-up, I had to ream 3 of them to make it fit. oh well, and it only took 2.5qts to fill it - I have a detroit in there - does that hog 2.5 qts worth of space? or should I let it settle a little then put more in?

I think it only took 3qts to fill my 14bff, but the total capacity may include the hubs. They don't drain with the diff cover off.
I still can't see 4.5 quarts in a np208. Vee, have you serviced yours yet? I don't have any 208s here except on Carl's 'burb, but that seems like a lot of fluid.

not yet, I probably won't get to it til after this weekend's run.... too hot, and my rig doesn't fit in the garage, I do all my service out in the street :eek1: since my driveway isn't flat

I have changed the fluid many times in my 208. I have to buy a total of 5 quarts to fill it with a little left over. So the total is right around 4.5 quarts. Take a peak in a service manual or Haynes, they should have the exact capacity.

No chit?

What's the owner's manual say? Wonder if it's a hot vs cold climate thing.
