recovery strap

Looks good. Better than CHains IMO. Pick up a snatch block if you have a winch as well.

I wouldnt be orderin it from there. a local store near me sells them.

Its just the only place that had a good picture.

i keep two straps in my truck similar to that, except mine have hooks on the ends. ive used them several times, pulled a mercedies out of the mud, a few cars out of snow banks, and a jeep out of a wet sloppy hole..... and they dont take up alot of space in my trucks toolbox. im a fan.

Should I also pick up some clevis, or?

I am new to the recovery strap thing. Ive been using tow ropes and chains. But I figure its time to upgrade to something safer and stronger.

Pick up some D rings (clevis') Dont use hooks. About the only acceptable hooks are those that tow truck drivers use to secure to the frames and even then Im not sure id pull someone out with them.

Ok I will probaly go down and buy this stuff sometime this week. Cause I gotta take some stuff back there.

yeah i know the d-rings are better than the hooks, i tend to only pull small cars out of snowbanks with my truck, so the ones i have, although not the best, do the job. i also dont hook onto the cars, i tend to loop the strap around an axle or suspension component a few times, and then hook the strap back onto itself. this puts most of the stress on the strap loops instead of the hook itself.

As said, no hooks. When things break, the hook turns into a friggin missile and will break windshields and heads. See below about safety.

Shackles, clevis, D-rings, whatever you wanna call 'em ... absolute necessity, to connect the straps. Fortunately, they're not heinously expensive, and your local tractor or industrial supply place prolly has them. Get 'em as big as you can afford ... and figure you can use them on your custom winch bumper later, as well as for connecting straps. I have a set of CUCV shackles on my bumpers, with quick disconnect hitch clips on the pins ... so they make great attachment points, or can be removed to do crazy strap things as required.

Also, consider a short, wide strap, aka "tree saver." (Like uh, 3-4" wide instead of the 2", and maybe 6-8' long.) While handy for attaching to trees, they're also useful for short pulls, moving disabled trucks in the driveway, etc =))

I see 4WPW has varying flavours, some cheap:

I got in the other year when they misprinted the Procomp ones (their house brand) for $19 or something, got two of those plus the tree saver (and the treesaver cost more than the long straps =))

Recovery gone wrong can kill, maim, or at the very least, make a minor stuck a major one.

very informative article, thanks for posting it up dremu, although as ive stated, for what i use the hook straps for, they are safe. especially the way i attatch them to the truck and car im pulling out. i also dont get running starts to "jerk" people out, i find thats a common way vehicles are damaged. i always use a slow, steady application of power.

that being said, no, if my friends FJ cruiser was stuck up to the frame in mud, i would not use these straps to attempt to get her out.

I have one of the Ericson straps. Havent used it yet since it ended up coming in after my trip. Feels pretty damn beefy though.

Erickson straps are really good straps. I have had two a 2" and a 4" they hold up very well.
