I need to fix a recovery strap that was torn, tear is in the middle of the strap a hook ripped it right in the middle. Its about a 6" rip. What is the best way to repair these? Was going to take it to a canvas shop and have them take out the torn section and then sew it back together

Next question. Where have you guys found good deals on recovery straps. I want at least a 3" wide strap.

No matter what, the strap's strength cannot be recoverd by a stitched repair. The strap will break, and could severely hurt you, your truck, and any bystanders. There is no safe way to repair a strap, much safer to use it for something that is not going to put strain on it, or take it to it's breaking point.

x2, Tractor supply sells them at a decent price.

Tie it to your cage and use it as a spotters strap. Or tie it to a tree and swing a motor from it. Always a good discussion piece.

Cut it right at the rip on each strap.. have 'em sew a new loop in factory style. Just make sure whoever is doing this is using the right machine and not grandma's sewing machine.

Used to do this all the time for all sorts of people(that use them for work at least). You can't repair rips but you can always go shorter...

Especially if you ever use it as a "snatch strap." Although you know technically most straps people buy are not designed to be used as snatch straps. That's why they are called tow straps.

explorer pro comp are nice in 3" wide. the ends are folded to 2". thay slide perfect in 2" hitch hole and insert pin.

Straps are cheap. Buy a new one. Why risk your safety over a $20-30 strap?

This is not a cheap strap. Its a 4" wide erickson strap the cheapest I have seen these is about 85 bucks without shipping. I have used alot of straps over the years, these erickson straps (made in canada) are the best, they resist abriasion better than most, its easier to wash the mud out of them. After 4 years of hard use the thing barely looks a year old. I don't know what they do different but these are awesome straps. Hence the repair question.

I think I will just have them cut it in half and sew new loops in, there are alot of times when it would have been nice to have a shorter strap than a 30 footer

i hate when people do that. besides stressing the strap, it puts a lot of unnecessary force on the vehicles.

Hmm...

I never spent more than a few (dozen) bucks on a harbor freight/tractor supply strap. They seem to hold up as long for a lot less money. :dunno:

I have used those too. The reason I tried a more expensive one is that the mud we run in here is really acidic, I always spray my straps off the same day but this more expensive strap has done way better at dealing with this mud than any other strap I have had. It doesn't fray as easy either, when we are pulling poeple the straps are often rubbing on lava rock. This strap has dealt with that better than the cheap straps too.

I've been in a situation where we needed the "snatch" function:

I bought a $90 ARB snatch strap. It even has a shock indicator that tells you when the strap has been stressed too far and won't work as a snatch strap anymore.

That's just cool. Nice rig btw. kinda bright, but it makes it easier to hide from you I suppose.

Yeah I was selling (and still have some) of the military straps they use to drop cargo off the back of planes...

35-40' and a little bit bungie which is nice... 1.75" wide.. fits into a receiver so I have been told... 4 ply.....

Got any pictures of these beefy straps? And what exactly is a "snatch" strap?
