Any tricks on doing it without special tools?

I'm trying to get the tires off a set of ratty VW wheels to swap onto another set of wheels that are nicer.. :D

Once you get the first bead off you can usually get the second off by jumping on it a few times. Might be a little hard with tiny vw tires though

you can lay the tire on the ground then lay a 2x12 a few feet long up on to the tire like a ramp then drive a car up the board and sometimes it will break the bead. you may have to reposition the board a few times to find just the right spot but i have done this before so it does work.

a hilift jack on the tire and jacking up something heavy like in the reciever hitch of a truck.

should go without sayin but be VERY careful using this method ;)

works though. I usually use my other truck and run over the sidewall breakin it off the bead

we had a set of 33s bein stubborn one time, 3/4 ton w/ 35s wouldnt break em loose so a buddy went home and got his 18 wheeler and drove it up on the sidewall:D

jonathon is QUITE familiar with what NOT to do with a highlift (widow-maker... his words.) i may have almost killed him once with a little incident with a hi-lift... :yikes: sorry dude.

i spent 2 days trying to break the bead on my old 35" mtr's, and was only able to get one side broken off. i decided to just have a shop do it for $20/pop.

i drive over them.

but I have a local big rig/equipment tire shop that will mount/dis mount for 5 bucks..and they usually do it right then and there no real wait:D

Make friends with the guys at a tire place.

Could NOT get a set of 31" Mud Kings off of the stock 15" aluminum wheels off of my Ranger. Had barely been on there a year and a half and we could not get them off even with my Ranger on 33's on the sidewall.
Guys at Tire Factory popped them off, threw them in the bed, and told me have a nice day.
