redrilling axle shafts 6-8-lug?

Can a machine shop fill i nthe oles on an axleshaft and redrill them to 6 lug instead of 8? Need to know for 14bolt SF rear...TIA

I can see someone doing it--but I wouldn't. I'd go to the junkyard and locate some 6 lug shafts first, definitely.

problem is, 6 lug shafts are newer, and a lot harder to find...

Moser will make up a brand spanking new set of axle shafts for around $215. JY's around here want $150 for a set of old used stock ones!

<font color=blue>The 6 lug SF housings are wider than the 8 lug 83-87/91 housings are so the shafts will have to be cut and re-splined I think. Its easier to re-drill 8 lug shafts.</font color=blue>

I'm not sure about this, but I think it is possible to get an 8-lug to 6-lug wheel adapter for the SF. It should add 1.5-2 inches of track witdth to each side, making the rear tires sit pretty close to the same width as the front. I know that it can't be done for the FF 14B because of the huge hub (at least without adding a foot of track width to each side).

14 SF, not 14 FF

And as for the axles being harder to find, I disagree. Junkyards around here don't keep old stuff anymore. The new stuff is easy to find.
