I think I'm ready to tackle regearing my 12 bolt and D44 but I've never done it before so I'm looking for whatever info I can get before I get started.

How long should I expect this to take for a first timer? I don't want the blazer out of action long during the summer. Can I reasonably expect to get this done in a weekend?

What special tools do I need to gather before starting?

Obviously I'll be buying a new ring and pinion, but what else do I need? I saw duelling mention a "master install kit". I didn't know I needed something like that.

Anything else that you think a novice needs to know ahead of time?

Master install kits get you everything you will need. Aside from the actual gears and tools.

Shims, bearings, marking compound, crush sleeve, pinion nut, and some lock tight. Even a book with the torque specs etc.

A clamshell carrier bearing puller is the bees knees. But they are expensive $300 for a cheap one.

If not going that route, get your old bearings pulled off the carrier and pinion, grind the inside out so they slide on and off easily. Makes installing shims a breeze. Then when you get the measurements you want, press the real bearings in and assemble.

Also you need an inch lb beam style torque wrench, and a brass punch for pounding races in helps.

Also a dial indicator with magnetic base for setting backlash.
